Assignment #3- Are MEME’S Art?

“Are MEMEs Art?”ੈ✩‧₊˚

No, I don't consider MEMEs to be art. Art to me has to have a symbolic meaning behind what's being created or presented. All definitions of art point toward the use of human creativity, skill, and imagination in its creation. Some forms I do consider to be art are writing ( e.g. poems, plays, books), music, drawing, painting, digital,  and movies.  Despite MEMEs being visual forms of content they are not art, MEMEs can offer a cultural lens, and a sense of commentary, in the same way, art does, they divert from art in the respect that they offer no symbolism and are void of emotional impact or intention.

“British historian R.G. Collingwood would say that internet memes are the performance of emotion and it’s not true expressions, making meme makers ranters and ravers and not actual artists.”
If MEMEs were to be considered art they would be the lowest forms of art similar to messaging we wouldn't say that sending a message to someone is art, would we? pop artists try to blur boundaries in an attempt to elevate “low” culture to “high” art. I agree with Kash Jordan's point when he mentions the easy accessibility of MEMEs and digital content is the main reason why MEMEs aren’t immediately considered art or being consumed as fine art.
I think MEMEs being considered art is bad for the art community MEMEs undeniably lack the substance, motivation, and humanity that characterizes art. MEMEs being used instead as a form of communication is good. I think MEMEs are simply forms of self-expression and nothing more because of the lack of creativity with MEMEs. MEMEs follow a certain format and art does not there's so much creative expression that comes with art.
MEMEs can be used for storytelling because the images and GIFs you use can portray what you're feeling and can tell a story much similar to how writing can, MEMEs when used correctly-in a way that flows, can be used to create a visual storytelling technique.

  1. Hi, Aniya!
It’s interesting that you think that memes shouldn’t be considered as art, but after reading your post I could understand why you would think that. I like the memes that you created and the ones that you uploaded as your favorites, especially the sad ant one because it’s one of my favorites too. Love the cat gif in the beginning too, it’s so cute! 😀

    1. Thank you so much Rehaana I’m glad you can see things from another perspective that may not resonate with your own. I’m happy you enjoyed the memes that I created and uploaded. The cat meme is very cute and I can’t wait to look to add bunny GIFs in my next post.

  2. Hey Aniya. I do not blame you for having Drake memes as your favorite type of memes. It seems like he and Druski have a meme for any situation. With the sad ant meme, I felt that because that is how I feel about coming to school sometimes, especially early in the morning (I am not a morning person). I feel that memes should be considered a type of art form. They are not as valuable compared to what we usually see as art but art comes in different forms.

    1. Drake memes are the funniest, I agree that he and Druski have a meme for any situation and tiktok takes advantage of his many audios. I think I am slowly turning into a morning person, the early morning makes me productive for some reason also stretching in the morning can help boost your attitude for the rest of the day. I do agree that art comes in different forms though so I can see how memes could be considered art to you.

  3. Excellent work on this!
This is by far one of the best perspectives and stances on this post that I have seen in a long time!
Thank you for sharing some great insights and examples to consider!
I appreciate it and hope this post gets more eyes on it for contrast.
We done on all criteria here!
