I had no idea this class would be so much fun when I first started. This is the only class I’ve ever taken that permits us to utilize memes in our assignments.   The Professor truly provided us with unmatched creative freedom. I wish all professors would understand all the pressure they put on their students so that it wouldn’t be as hectic to try and get all the assignments turned in on time.

As the weeks went on and even though I was behind on many assignments at one point I still didn’t feel overwhelmed by this class. I was still able to get all of my assignments done just because of the pure fact that I actually enjoyed this class and there’s nothing I would change about it. I would say this has been my favorite class and I’m about the graduate in the spring and I’ve never said that.

I wish that there could be training for other professors to understand that there are different teaching styles and maybe just maybe there isn’t the best or it can be changed even the slightest. There is room for improvement everywhere.

I’m still struggling a bit with my website here and there but I believe it’s an issue on my end because it either keeps freezing, crashing and or even my wifi going out so I can’t blame it on the hosting website itself. I will try my best even though our class has officially come to an end to get my website up and running to my liking. I hope all of you enjoy your Christmas break and remember we will never have a professor like Ryan Seslow again but the memories will always be there.

Here is my unfinished website but not for long. 

Once I picked my domain name cotton creations I knew I would have to start thinking of how I would like my website to look. I decided on making it cohesive to the Instagram that I am also working on simultaneously which ended up working out really well. I had already created a logo for my business which is what I’m going to use to be the model for my website. 

Registering my domain name was the easiest part for me even though it took a while for me to pick the perfect domain name. The hardest part was actually getting to edit the site. I had to go through many hurdles along the way but I would say it was all worth it in the end. After weeks of trying to gain access to my site, I finally was able to start customizing and making it feel more like me. 

I’ve tried creating my own website in the past using Squarespace and it didn’t go quite as I planned. Every time I think I’ve finally fixed one problem another one emerges and their customer service didn’t really help me either so I just gave up after months of trying. 

But then I started CT 101 and I was able to get another chance at it again the best part about this class is that it’s face-to-face so if I had any issues I would just ask the professor. I couldn’t do that with Squarespace. WordPress makes it easy to understand exactly what to do and even if I don’t, all I have to do is go on youtube and search for tutorials. 

I will never be going back to Squarespace again. I’m going to stick with WordPress even after the class is completed because I truly feel like this is the best option for me. Even with the minor hiccups I had.

Potential Domain Names

I’m obsessed with film and television so I would create little commentary/reaction videos of different projects and upload them onto my website. As well as all of the short films I have created in the past and will continue to create I will upload them to my website for everyone to see.

cotto creations:

I create handmade and digital art and sell them so I will use this website to host all of my work. I will even create a shopping page so people can order directly from my site.

my inner child:

I will host the art that I created based on childhood movies and tv shows for events where I have been in charge of recreating their childhood magic.

remembrance:

I will use this site to help individuals all around the world. I create digital portraits of families who have lost a loved one in their life and add them to the picture and sell those. It has made many people I know happy that there able to have another picture with the person they loved so deeply and still do.

My Choice

The domain name I decided to choose is cotto creations because it is a way for me to incorporate everything that I’ve described in all of the other options but under one lens and keep it cohesive.

How am I doing in CT101?

I feel like I am doing okay in this class right now. I am having some trouble with getting all of my assignments done in a timely manner. I’m taking 7 classes currently which is the most I’ve ever done. It is proven to be harder than I thought but I’m trying to work through them. This isn’t an excuse for being behind in blog posts, it’s just a lot of work to keep organized and make sure everything is done by the due dates.

What have I learned and retained the most?

I believe that, as a result of this self-reflection, my performance is now higher than it was prior to enrolling in the course. I do believe that when I write for other classes, I am more honest with myself rather than just providing terse responses for the sake of responding. I now communicate more and act more intimately. Despite the fact that I post frequently, I rarely leave comments on the posts of my classmates. Overall, I think I would get a B+ in this class because I’m enjoying it so much and because it’s fun to read everyone’s work. I believe that I perform well in this class because I always offer my best effort, but I could do better at evaluating my classmates’ work.

I decided to stick with the Visual Assignments on the website. I just felt that they resonated with me more. The two assignments I chose from the ds106 webpage were My Favorite Lyric and We’re The Real Life Brady Bunch!

Option 1

I chose this assignment because I am a big music person. I’m a person that believes music can have a big effect on an individual’s mental health. For example, if you are sad I would say listen to Firework by Katy Perry.

The song I chose is what I listen to when I’m having a bad day and I literally can’t get out of my bed to do anything. I’ve been told it’s called seasonal depression.  I’ve listened to this song since I was in middle school it is called Wake Me Up by Avicii, and the specific lyrics from the song that always sort of have a lasting effect on me are “All this time I was finding myself, and I didn’t know I was lost”. 

I used Canva to make my image. I went searching interest to find the best image that depicted these lyrics and I finally found one. I downloaded the image on my laptop and then uploaded it into Canva. I then went on to dafont.com looking for a 70s retro font once I types out the lyrics I used the curving tool in Canva to wrap the words around the maze.

Once Upon a Time                                             Supernatural

Many things inspire me, I usually take my inspiration from what I’m watching currently. It may be an old movie, a modern movie, or even a comedy skit. etc. I honestly never know until it happens. 

When I was reading this blog post and reflecting on what I was doing for the week I immediately thought of two shows that I am currently watching which are Supernatural and Once Upon a Time. Yes, I know that both of these shows are over and have been for a while. I choose a certain amount of shows and movies to rewatch within a certain amount of time every few months and those are the ones I’m hooked on at the moment.

I wanted my mmm. page to symbolize the feeling I get every time I rewatch these shows but in order to do that I had to pick one first. I decided to go with Once Upon a Time just because I felt I can make it look more whimsical and less dark which is what I was trying to come off more as. I came up with the idea of maybe creating a portal in the middle of the forest but I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. 

Step 1: Was finding the portal so I started by googling images of portals to see which one I was drawn to and this is the one I chose. 

Step 2: Finding the forest this is the one I chose. 

There are many questions that will always be debatable. For example, what came first the chicken or the egg? What do you think? and why?

Memes do fit the criteria of art, as may be seen by doing a definition search. Memes are legitimate forms of artistic expression that have cultural effects outside of the digital realm. They become ingrained in our minds, aiding in our understanding of the environment, and form a part of our collective psyche.

Now before you make any sudden decisions think about this.

Why is it that a person can make slashes on a canvas and can sell it in an art gallery but graffiti can’t get the same recognition?

Well-worked graffiti art is typically creative, colorful, and bold, and thus it changes the character of the particular area where it appears. In many cases, this change is positive, since the art turns drab and monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination.

Art is constantly evolving, but if the purpose of art is to express human truth, the Internet meme fits the bill. Like many other art forms, we use memes to understand, critique, and share thoughts about the world around us. Exhibits on Internet memes signal their importance and pay tribute to them as cultural icons.

My Last First Day of School

What did you think on the first day of the CT101?

On the first day of CT101, I experienced some anxiety. I had no idea what to anticipate. Although it is well outside of my area of expertise, I thought it would be a fun subject to take as an elective during my final semester. Unbeknownst to me, I had a friendly deaf professor who understands the pressure and ridiculous demands of many other professors. He is the first professor I have ever had who is deaf but he is also the best professor I have ever had in my four years at York. Since my nerves had disappeared by the end of class, I had the impression that this was going to be an enjoyable class. It is good to have a lecturer that encourages students to express themselves.

Did you like hearing about the course and its creative content? How did it make you feel?

The potential for a student to express themselves is something that is lacking from many courses, but this course has a lot of originality, and I love it. It’s a place where I can just be myself without having to worry about anything, unlike many of my other classes.

How does CT101 compare to some of your other classes so far?

This is not only my favorite class this semester, this is my favorite class for all my four years. I truly believe it will be hard to bet especially with me only having one semester left after this. This class allows me time to breathe rather than all my other courses I’ve taken. I’m always stressed in my other classes because there’s always some kind of issue either with the professor or the deadline of an assignment is always changing but they’re never on the blackboard when they’re supposed to be. This class I get to express myself through gifs and memes. I get to tell my stories and learn how to upgrade my knowledge on digital tools to express myself freely. There will be no class better than CT 101 in my opinion. 

What are the creative potentials of this class?

This class has endless potential. The ability to learn how to tell stories using various digital technologies is limitless. Learning new abilities is thrilling and enjoyable at all times. I can use this class to better the skills I already know and love. I am currently working to set up my own photography business and this class is just helping me get that much closer to my goal. 

How do you feel about learning new skills that use Internet tools?

I am always eager to pick up new abilities. Why not learn how to use some online tools to express oneself, especially given how frequently we use the internet these days. I can’t wait to learn more. Learning how to use hyperlinks and create gifs was fun and informative.

How do you say it / pronounce it? Gi-f or Ji-f?

I will forever say Ji-f since the first time I heard it. It will now and forever be a soft g never the hard g no matter what anyone says to me that is the end of the battle. NO MORE ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

What Makes Me Happy On The Internet???

All week I’ve been focused on one thing and one thing alone. It felt like this day would never come!!!! The release of Cobra Kai Season 5 was a long time coming. If you don’t know what The Karate kid is or Cobra Kai is and you’re leaving under a rock then here is some background for you. 

My obsession with Cobra Kai started way back when I was younger. My mom’s side of the family has always had their own relationship with karate because they grew up watching the movies and learning karate simultaneously. My uncle is a huge Karate Kid fan, we have a running joke in my family that my uncle is the real-life Daniel LaRusso. He firmly believes that karate is used for defense not to be used to start a fight, it also doesn’t help that his name is also Daniel. My uncle became a karate sensei and taught everyone in the family karate. It will forever be a part of our lives.

But there is something different about Cobra Kai now that we didn’t have with the original Karate Kid movies. We set up a countdown for the entire family so that when the day comes we are all together to watch the new season. Everyone turns their phones off for the day to make sure we don’t get a spoiler out of the blue. We all like to be on the same page when we first watch it. We even take the week prior to rewatch all the sessions that came before the new one to make sure we haven’t missed anything.

In Cobra Kai, Daniel La Russo and Johnny Lawrence continue their inevitable conflict more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

The previous season leaves off exactly where this new one begins. In prison is John Kreese. Cobra Kai is being expanded by Terry Silver. Mexico is where Miguel is. Daniel is attempting to make things right with assistance from Okinawa. I won’t give anything away. Simply smile and take in the karate.

Cobra Kai’s greatest strength is that it’s entertaining to watch. The plot centers on a lost fish who, with the help of a clever bonsai tree craftsman, finds his way to triumph in his new hometown’s All Valley Karate Tournament. Cobra Kai skillfully incorporates that spirit into this remake while maintaining its sense of humor.

Ralph Macchio and William Zabka carry the play admirably, even if I adore the entire group. The distinction between the good guy and the bad guy from the first movie is blurred as Johnny works to better his life while Daniel takes everything for granted. Both require many wake-up calls and eventually come to blows before cooperating for one reason or another.
