Final Blog Post

  • During the spring semester which is also my last semester here at York College, I chose to take CT 101 to be one out of five of my courses. I enjoyed my experience taking this class with the professor and the couple of people that came in each day. Throughout that process I also learned new things, those new things include how to express myself in a creative way through the different blog post prompts.

  • I also learned how to make my own website. I had some experience in a previous class I took two semesters ago, but we used the app WIX instead. In addition, using multimedia such as GIFS and Memes was new to me as well.

FINAL GRADE?

  • I think I deserve a B not just any ordinary B but a B+. From making sure I make a blog post every week with hyperlinks as well as GIFS and memes. Looking to find specific GIFS and memes that relate to how I’m feeling. I tried to pick ones that most people have never seen before. Also  attending class in person not only watching the recorded videos at home.

ENJOYED THE MOST?

  • What I enjoyed most about this class was making blog posts, specifically seeing what the other students in the class put on the Commons page. Also the usage of GIFS.

MAINTAIN IT YES OR NO?

  • I think I’ll maintain my website but I might abandon it for a little while. Due to the fact that I graduated and I will now have all the time in the world in my hands. I would want to lay off anything school related for sometime. I would then maintain pretty soon because my friend is a model and she wants the to help her create a website and she's using the same website.

My website is called Threads and Headlines. I customized it to the best of my ability with the help of a few YouTube tutorials. I wanted it to give the vibe of Pinterest the mobile app. It has outfit inspos and anything you could possibly imagine.  I was upset with the limited amount of colors they had for the overall background. Here goes

Assignment 10

So far on my website, I didn’t go with the recommend default theme the professor mentioned. Now thinking about it he was right. I tried looking through other themes but majority of them although they may look appealing it just looks a mess just like this kid eating this burger below. At this point I’m going to stick with what the professor said.

It has too many things on it personally. Now back to the website called Threads and Headlines, I want it to sort of look like a real life magazine you would pick up in a local corner store. I want to include things such as fashion, beauty, music, helpful tips, and many more. I want it to cater to all kinds of people.

Think of Vogue Magazine’s website for instance, they cover topics such as beauty, health, fashion, lifestyle, and many more. I kind of want to mimic that but also make it my own as well.

So far these are the customizations I made to my website so far. It’s not much but it’s something lol. Here below is the home of my blog. It may be somewhat blurry. Looking back it, I think I’ll end up changing the theme.

Assignment 9

Experimenting with Domain names and finally speaking and finally ending with “Threads and Headlines”. For those of you who didn’t see my the explanation behind it, the reason is it’s the name of my page on Instagram. Since I’m doing a journalism internship I wanted to share my passion for both fashion and journalism.

Threads, like the threads and needles used in sewing, and headlines, like the large font used in newspapers to indicate the subject matter of each article.

I think it would best suit for the type of content I want to post. Some ideas I was thinking about including is trending fashion item, fashion tips, fashion do’s and don’ts, and many more.

As far as the process of creating the account it was fairly easy. At some point in class I was following as the professor displayed it on the screens and then I left the rest to do at home.

I ran into some issues accessing and installing Word Press. Here are some screenshots of the process along with some GIFS to see how I felt.

This was ……
What gave me the most trouble is this
I emailed the professor to help me with this issue. This is how I felt when it wasn’t loading. Whenever this problem is fixed, I’ll update this blog post.
Overall I give the experience a 8/10. Had the website loaded I would give it a 10/10. I’m glad there was a coupon code because if we had to pay for it, that would not be suited for everyone.

Domain Name: Assignment 7

After attending class last Tuesday I was excited to play around with domain names. A domain name is basically a name that can be either suited for a business account or even for a fun website you’re making.

This is how I felt in my mind when the professor gave the assignment announcement during class. Also since it’s spring now I want to make this post more spring inspired. With the addition of pastel colors being added.

Some potential names I was thinking for a domain name include

  • Threads and Headlines.org: This is my Instagram page, where I share material related to my internship. Threads, like the threads and needles used in sewing, and headlines, like the large font used in newspapers to indicate the subject matter of each article.
  • TheJoiExperience.com:This one just so happens to incorporate my name. I believe that life is an experience, and I want to share it with all of you.
  • JOI NOT JOY.net:The funny thing about this name is that, despite the fact that it ends with an i, some people mistakenly believe that my name is spelled like “joy”. It’s almost like a parody of my real name.
  • TheFashionChronicle.com: I follow the Queens Chronicle newspaper, and I thought it would be cool to add my love for fashion in it as if I’m apart of it.
  • Just That Girl. org: I sometimes catch myself saying “I’m just a girl” and in reality I am.

These five domain names randomly came to my mind while typing this at 12:43 in the morning. I got these ideas for my passion for fashion and journalism. I combined what both of them meant to me and here is what you see.

I would like my website to be almost similar to a Pinterest board on the app Pinterest. Pinterest is an app that has everything you could possibly image in real life, even down to the hair, makeup, and nail inso. Don’t worry it’s also male friendly as well. It one of my favorite apps.

Depop is also one of my favorite websites as well. It’s basically an online thrift store where you could sell your clothes to people all around the world. You could also buy things from vintage y2k to a piece nobody else has.

Mid Semester Reflection

How am I doing in CT101?  In CT 101, I believe I’m doing fairly well. Each week I make sure to turn in every assignment that is posted every Tuesday for class.

What have I learned and retained the most? What I’ve learned and retained the most would have to be including GIFS in majority of my posts while having hyperlinks to back up what I'm saying.  An example is for assignment 2 I included a hyperlink of the well known TV show Family Guy” . I included it for reference to anybody who has never watched the show before. I included it to explain where the GIF originates from.

I included it for reference to anybody who has never watched the show before. I included it to explain where the GIF originates from.
What new skills have I developed , cultivated and displayed regularly in my weekly posts? The new skills I have developed in my weekly posts are my story-telling skills. For example for assignment 4, where we had to discuss our passion. I feel like the word choices I used and the images included made people get a glimpse of who I am as a person and the things I enjoy. Here's my assignment below.

Passionate About: Assignment 4

What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class? Before taking this class I wasn’t sure exactly how to make my own meme. I didn’t know there are lots of websites out there that will help with the process of making one. I used the GIPHY website to help me along with the zoom videos Professor Ryan puts up.
What grade do I believe I am maintaining and why do I deserve that grade? I believe I deserve a B for a grade for putting my creativity into every blog post.

Do I see my weekly blogging work expanding creatively? If so, please explain why –  or am I stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time, how will I change that? Every week I do believe my weekly blogging work has expanded creatively. I do think I could change up the way I format the posts, whether it be with adding different fonts and colors. In fact I changed fonts and even the color of the texts!
Are there any assignments that you are missing? If so, list them. There aren’t any missing assignments that I’m missing.

Are you commenting regularly on your classmates' posts? Are you responding back to comments given to you by the professor & your classmates? I am commenting regularly on my classmates' posts. I try to aim for at least 2 comments per assignment.
Are you participating during the class time? If not, explain why. I am not often participating during class time because I’m not present most days. It could be as simple as me coming to class and making a comment based on the assignment the professor is going over. Even offering commentary whenever the professor asks a question.
This is the time to be accountable. How will you make needed improvements? I need to start attending class more frequently if I want to get better. I've been absent for a few days, but now that the semester is almost over, I'll stop. Furthermore, attendance definitely has a significant impact on my final grade. Getting a good grade in this course will help my GPA because I'm also graduating in May. That will also start with me going to sleep much earlier to be able to wake up.

Assignment #5: Digital Storytelling Project Flexibility

After browsing through the website for the DS 106 Assignment Repository, an assignment that caught my eye is underneath the visual assignment category. It was labeled “name that flower” with a picture of a yellow with the center being red. This would be rather easy to do because google is FREE!. I would just type into the description of the flower on google and pick which one matches it the best.

The flower is a Golden Tickseed. For those of you just finding out about this flower, the Golden Tickseed is native in the southern parts of the United States. They are well known for their bright yellow petals “with maroon centers..

The second assignment I came across comes from the same website and it’s a design assignment. It is titled “Missing Person”.

The prompt is “Create a missing posters flyer for a fictional movie/show character, made-up person, animal, or a real person. Be sure to include a picture, the name, characteristics, and last seen date and place. Let your imagination do the talking for this poster”.

I’ve never done something like this before. Making sure everything lines up, picking out  the different fonts. In addition, making sure everything is visually appealing might be a little tricky.

I do consider myself creative. Storytelling plays a huge part in making this as well, the idea of making a fictional character that draws the attention of my classmates will be fun.

I believe I should be doing the minimum of three and the maximum of five for the number of projects to do this semester. In terms of storytelling skills, it will; help me to create engaging content not only for myself but for the rest of the students

In the description, the person did not include what type of websites to make posters, so I did some research and the best I found were Picsart and Canva.

First I went on Canva and selected a blank page and here’s what I added from there.

From here I made up my own fictional character but I’m not sure what to put yet.  I also made one for the backstory on how my character went missing.

I wasn’t sure whether to have AI generate the image for me or draw the image by hand.

Here is the AI generated image. I used the website Gencraft. It allowed to type in the description I made up and it generated an image. It has some pretty cool features including making the picture 3D, Cartoon, and even in watercolor.

Passionate About: Assignment 4

Passion is everywhere you just have to go out and find it. Some might describe as your true north  is where your values, beliefs, and sense of purpose meet. I agree with this statement because once you find what you’re passion about you’ll get a real feel of who you are as a person.

Although I am passionate about many things, one of the top on my list would have to be fashion specifically styling different pieces together. Fashion styling

For those who don’t know basically is styling your clothes by choosing the accessories and clothing to fit the overall kind of aesthetic you are looking for.

This is an example of how I styled a friend of mine who makes music for a performance she was attending. Depending on the occasion, the outfits vary from different textures, prints, and colors. To make it easier I already know her shoe and clothing size. So when finding pieces online or in the store it   saves time.

It’s amazing that fashion styling may be traced back to centuries. Rose Bertin styled Queen Marie Antoinette in 1772, which marks the beginning of fashion styling history. This is reaction I got after reading that article

Even as a small child, I have always chosen what I wanted to wear. I tried experimenting with different prints and styles since I was given that creative freedom. “I have a passion for fashion,” I suppose you could say. That line is taken from the Bratz theme song, which is also my source of inspiration.

Here’s the link for the Bratz’s theme song.

I defiantly stand by this saying “If you look good, you’ll feel good”. This is me whenever I buy an unnecessary amount of clothes only to throw it back in the closet barley wearing it.

Earrings are my go-to fashion item. I feel naked whenever I’m not wearing earrings.. A carefully selected pair of earrings may instantly elevate your look from a 7 to a 10. Oh, and I prefer hoops for earrings. I wore earrings as a child because my mother used to tell me that the bigger the hoop, the bigger the dream, which is why I adore them so much.

Assignment #3

After looking up “Are Memes Art”, some links I found are

Reddit and TNR.

Memes staying is a good thing for art because it shows creativity. Making it is not an easy process. Think about it like this, it could be a hit or miss depending on what the words say on it.

It’s good for communication due to sometimes instead of sending how you feel through words, you could just send a meme that will explain everything. It could be shared across social media allowing individuals to connect with others who have similar interests/humor.

Memes could be used for story telling, because majority of the time they come from cultural references and for visual purposes. On the web, from what I’ve seen memes are made to cheer people up or make them laugh.  In the article,Are memes the pop culture art of our era?, I agree with the statement ““A successful meme is by definition reproducible, shareable, and recognizable”.

This meme below is a cultural reference to the video about a woman named Sweet Brown and her famous catch phrase ” Ain’t nobody got time for that”. I remember watching the actual video, I was dying laughing.

These are at least 3 of my favorite memes. The first one is from my favorite show “Flavor of Love” showing Tiffany Pollard also known as New York. The backstory is a bit inapropriate for this class format to explain but the way she sits on the bed is a mood.

This is accurate representation of whenever I get my bob silk pressed, I move my head side to side just like the meme presented above.

This is the facial expression I make whenever I see something weird or odd. I’ve been making this face dating back to when I was a young kid.

Here are the memes I created:

.
Once I realized this course didn’t require a textbook cost, I was even more excited to take it.
.
I rewatched the zoom for Tuesday’s class and once I heard the professor say “This is another trick assignment”, I found it to be funny because I’m part of the many who didn’t fully read the last assignment that well, therefore me not including everything.

Assignment #2: GIFS

GIFS are universal for everyone in the world. It’s become apart of how we communicate on a regular day basis. Now taking it back to the history of GIFS, become a solution to a problem in the article “The GIF is 30 years old. It didn’t just shape the internet — it grew up with the internet” as a way to compress images while also having minimal data loss. The creators did a great job in my opinion.

What did you think on the first day of the CT101? This is the perfect GIF to describe the level one excitement I had on the first day of CT 101. I actually dropped a psychology class in order to take this one as an elective because the  course description sounded more interesting. In addition, this is my senior year and wanted to have more fun before I left.

This Gif comes from a scene in the movie The Princess and the Frog.

Did you like hearing about the course and its creative content? How did it make you feel? Hearing about the course and its creative content was enjoyable, a friend of mine recently took this course last semester and recommend it to me.  Being able to include the things I’m most interested in sounds like a win to me.

How does CT101 compare to some of your other classes so far? I don’t think CT 101 compares to any of my classes so far. The classes I’m taking doesn’t necessarily allow for this much creative freedom. This is why I was drawn to the course description.

What are the creative potentials of this class? The creative potentials of this class is to take the skills I’ll learn and possibly apply them to real life. Especially since majority of this world is media based, I can improve my tech skills. I could also see what other people are posting and you could learn a lot from the different ways of thinking.

How do you feel about learning new skills that use Internet tools? Learning new skills that use internet tools is a great idea actually. It offers more flexibility and convenience. Instead of shying away saying “I can’t”, instead I’ll just do. This is a reference from the show “Family Guy” .

It reminds me of whenever I get my nails done and it’s hard to type on my laptop. Here is a good representation.

Giphy was much easier to use than Imgur. On my computer Imgur was a little more complex when attempting to make my own GIF.  On Giphy I was able to type in keywords to find specific gifs. I’ve seen it’s divided into different categories.

What Makes Me Happy On The Media? Joi Calinda

What Makes Me Happy?

Joi Calinda

Over the course of this week, something that made me happy in the media came off the Instagram app. As I’m scrolling on my feed I see a reel that shows Lil Mama, a female rapper best known for creating the viral song “Lip Gloss” , had just launched her lip gloss brand called Vaniteast Cosmetics.

This gives me nostalgia as a little girl watching her music video on Youtube and the lipgloss in the video being so girly. Literally everyone wanted her lip gloss wand. So to see her launch her company with lip products made me feel young again although I’m only 21. For anybody that hasn’t seen the video you could watch here it on youtube: Lil Mama: Lipgloss

If you take a look at the beginning of the music video she has a keychain with lipgloss in it. As a girl always wanted one of my own.

The brand is in collaboration with a jewelry company called Aporro, calling the cosmetic line “It’s Poppin”. Which is ironic, it’s the same catchy hook she says throughout the song. On Instagram an instrumental to “Lip Gloss” plays in the background as the rapper puts the gloss onto her lips tossing it back and forth with another person.

After seeing this I’m interested in buying to see the quality and since I’ve been getting into doing my own makeup.
