Final Blog Post For CT 101

Reflection Blog Of My CT101 Journey – Arrivederci!

It’s that bittersweet moment where I have to bid farewell to CT101 and Professor Ryan. It sucks that the semester has come to an end but I have to be very honest in saying that I’m quite relieved. It has been a difficult one and the workload was ridiculous but CT101 was the diamond in the rough! As a senior graduating, writing this final reflection blog post seems like a full circle moment not just for this class but my last semester. I must admit that I struggled with assignments and overall school which isn’t a normal thing for me but mental health issues are very much real.

Looking Back  . . .
let’s analyze shall we

At the beginning of this class, I did not know much about digital editing, websites, or even making memes/gifs. I have, however, learned new skills that I can’t wait to keep utilizing. I am an avid meme collector so now I can add meme creator to my skill set. My very first blog post was not the best, to be frank. I enjoyed writing and expressing myself and picking cool videos and memes to use but the format, layout, and overall style were disorganized and I decided to leave it that way instead of making changes as a reminder of where I started. My second blog post though was beautifully done in my opinion 🥺. I found a better flow for my media and my storytelling. I even got to create my own meme with one of my favorite shows “enchantment” which was fun, I thoroughly loved doing that. My third blog was equally done well and had a good balance of media.

By the fourth blog post I feel like it wasn’t as exciting as my others. I was pleased with the assignment and my results with that. I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I had to teach myself but I would never think of doing so if it wasn’t for this course.

just a screenshot of the assignment I chose to do.

By the time the midterm came I had learned a lot already and reflecting on that, I can see how I grew in terms of writing much lengthier blog posts.

What did you enjoy about our class and how you will apply your new skills to the world?

For one thing, I can say I learned how to write a blog and tell my story, thoughts, and ideas in a digital journal. Every week a new skill was taught and it challenged me to push myself creatively to figure out what do I really want to showcase and share with the class. I look forward to building my website more, adding more features and widgets, writing more blogs, embedding more content from social media, and hopefully share that with friends and family.

Were there difficulties?

Yes! Of course. I’m no expert and I found some things quite challenging. Picking domain names for one wasn’t as easy as it would seem. Keeping up with blog posts was not as easy as well. I admit I fell off at certain times but I feel like I put a lot of effort into ensuring that when I completed my assignments they were thoughtful and to the best of my abilities.

We Have A Website! We Have Landed Earthlings!

My website took a while to be born but when she finally landed it was worth the extra time and effort.  My website –> https://thereslifeoutside.com I am very proud of her, what she stands for and how far she has come.

Into the Universe, We Go!  –> This website was created as a tiny speck in the multiverse that is the internet for the purpose of showcasing everyday life and interest. A place where people can gather to bond over shared intrigue. I hope this space I have carved out brings someone laughter, happiness, or peace in any form.

Building my website was not easy and it took a lot of trial and error to figure out what I wanted, what worked, and what I wanted to share. The lab videos provided much help in maneuvering the basic features and I got to a point where I just played around with the customization until I settled on something I loved! For example, I really toyed around with the site identity, background, and color pallet for a while. I wanted catchy slogans and quotes, I wanted the page to look trippy! I think I achieved that and it was a hassle to get it to that point. Below are some snippets of my website I hope you like it!

Will you maintain and keep up your new website? If so, how? If not, Why not?

I will most definitely maintain my website. I put a lot of hard work and effort into it and I want to continue sharing my blog post on everyday things. I have big ideas in store for where I would like to take this website next. I have ideas on future content such as talking about sneakers and other conspiracy theories, much more stuff about space and astrology and I’d like to keep customizing it.

My website so far has a few blog posts and I think my favorite has to be the one about the impact of social media. I embedded really cool tweets from Twitter that gave me a good laugh. I also added a photo gallery because I’d like to upload pictures of space and other interesting topics from Tumblr (giving credit of course to the creators).

Creating a website isn’t easy but Professor Ryan made it such a fun experience and with ups and downs I managed to create something I truly love. It has given me a new hobby to continue over the summer. Thank you☺️!

What Grade? Let’s See . . .

I feel like I have not been the best with my assignments in terms of chronologically keeping up (this semester kicked my butt!) but I have completed all my assignments but more importantly, I think I produced really great quality content. I have tried my best to showcase the skills I learned every week. I also try my best to sit and write really detailed blog post and I hope it reflects. I think looking at where I started to where I am now I have made great improvements and for that, I think I deserve an A.

me manifesting an A!

With that being said, I’d like to bring this final blog post to an end. I can’t thank you enough professor for this course. It was really one of the best courses I have taken in all my years at York. It not only allowed me to be creative, have a digital journal, make my own website but at my own pace, and in the times we are in right now that is deeply appreciated! With that, I bid you farewell and enjoy your summer break!

Adios Amigos!

INTO THE UNIVERSE WE GO !

ARE WE TRULY ALONE???? 👽

Are We Truly Alone?

The concept of life is quite complex and the idea of other life forms existing out there is truly mind-blowing. This blog post was interesting to do and I can’t wait to start discussing all the things life has to offer us here on Earth. Feel free to tell me what you think about what else you think is out there. Do you even believe in a multiverse? Do you think we’re alone? Any suggestions for my website?  I hope you enjoy this blog!

Website registered! What will I be doing with my site?

Possibilities Are Endless To Be Honest . . .

The process of registering for my website was fairly easy and the step-by-step video provided by Professor Seslow made it go by real smoothly. Now that I’m all registered for my website “thereslifeoutside.com” I’m very excited about the possibilities that exist about what I can do with this platform. I know I plan on making regular blog posts that express regular, daily life that infuses my interest and hopefully others as well. I really am into sneakers, specific fandoms such as Marvel, Game of Thrones, I’d also like to include things about space, the universe, astrology, and so forth and I’d like to make blogs about these topics. Of course, memes and gifs galore because I want my website to be tiny speck in this multiverse of the internet to uplift and make people laugh. Tumblr is a good example of a website that gives me those vibes. A collection of interest and popular culture. Some things are still up in the air in terms of how I want my website to look and be structured etc. but I look forward to customizing it and letting my creativity go wild. Please any ideas, feedback, thoughts, constructive criticism are all welcomed! I really want to make this website to the best of my ability and hopefully, attract people to come and take a peek at it.

The Mid-Semester Assessment Post

Mid Semester Point- Mayday! Mayday!

How am I doing in CT101? What grade do I believe I am maintaining?

Ct101 has been a really fun, engaging, and mentally stimulating class thus far. As a political science major, I’m very used to writing-intensive papers and the actual workload is a lot! but CT101 has allowed me to release my creative juices. I feel like the assignments are becoming more intense but in a good way. It’s forcing me to think and analyze each assignment in a different way, surely different than I’m used to because each assignment tackles something creatively different. I’ve utilized what I’ve learned so far as well as trying my own hand (whether I figure it out or not) to create interesting blog posts. I feel like overall I’m doing “okay” in CT101. I definitely started off stronger in the beginning but as the weeks have gone by I think a lot of people can relate to this feeling of being burned out by the semester, online learning, and what’s going on in the world. I know I can maintain an A but it requires me to be a bit more vocal and active, which is something I plan to work on for the second half of this semester.

What have I learned the most? What is my greatest learned asset in this class so far?

I think besides learning how to use BlackBoard Commons and obvious technical skills I think the knowledge I’ve acquired thus far is the greatest asset. The knowledge about the “digital world” I find to be beneficial for someone who is very new to this. Learning about intricate details, things I didn’t even think of as being significant such as domain names for example. At the end of the class I know I’ll always have this knowledge and can go on to building my own website if I chose to or even show someone else how to. Something I found to be equally satisfying is learning how to actually blog. Writing down my thoughts, opinions, and ideas I’ve found to be therapeutic but has also helped to strengthen my writing skills. I appreciate this kind of digital journaling.

What skills have I developed, cultivated, and displayed regularly in my posts?

Other than sharpening my writing skills through blogging, another layer I can identify is the story-telling abilities I’ve applied to each post. I’m essentially narrating what’s going on in my head in a healthy way. I’ve also developed the ability to make gifs/memes and the technical aspect that comes with that: animating them, embedding them, etc. and I think that shows in my post. I learned on a minor level through a very late all-nighter, determination, and a lot of music how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as hyperlinking things in my post, embedding videos so of which I need to incorporate more into my post.

How do I assess my performance through self-reflection in this class?

Honestly, I think self-reflecting is a well-needed skill and it’s one I use often, but, this class has shown me looking back at previous blog posts can help me to improve my future ones even if it’s the simplest thing. So let me reflect here on the work I’ve done so far.

Blog Post 1 – my very first post asked me to think about my slice of happiness on the internet but it was also my first blog post which is a bit obvious. I enjoyed the content but I think it was “chaotic” in the flow of the post.

Blog Post 2 – in this post I not only got to make my first animated gif but I improved in the flow of my post. I preferred how I wrote this blog and how each gif connected back to each of my thoughts.

Blog Post 3 – my third post I can safely say I got the flow how I want my post a bit more down pact – telling my narrative! however, I think I’m also getting a bit too comfortable with this pattern and need to branch out just to try and mix it up and make more interesting posts.

Blog Post 4 – this was one of my favorite but very frustrating assignments because I took a leap of faith to try something completely out of my comfort zone. I don’t think my blog post was done well enough to me but I think it’s cause I spent the majority of the time trying to get the 80s theme Sci-fi VHS tape to be perfect (as far as perfect goes) especially cause I never used Adobe applications. I see where I need to balance between the blog and if I have to create something . . . alas progress!

Blog Post 5 – this is my least favorite assignment in part cause I struggled with trying to figure out domain names. I tried my best and think I finally came up with good ones but it wasn’t easy, but I did include more hyperlinks which is an improvement.

Between these 5 blog posts and the one on The Internets Own Boy, I have improved my writing skills, the flow of blog posts, using more media forms but I need to try to push the boundaries more and try embedding videos for example.

What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class?

For one thing, I had no idea how to blog, or even create memes/gifs even though I use them every day. Pretty much everything I’ve learned so far is something I didn’t know how to do before.

all this knowledge … buffering

Do I see my weekly blogging work expanding creatively? If so, please explain –  or am I stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time, how will I change that?

Indeed I see my blogs expanding creatively in terms of trying to include more media and but I also feel like I’m stuck in a bit of a loop where my post has this certain flow or look to it and I would like to change it up but I’m not sure how to go about doing it. I think trying to use other media or playing around with the format, adding catchy titles and such can help. It’s a work in progress but any suggestions are welcomed!

Almost done with this semester . . . I look forward to the next set of assignments and my website to come and hopefully with all this reflection I create something really creative and cool.

spring 2021 got me like

The Internet’s Own Boy – Reflection Post

The Story of Aaron Swartz

The documentary “The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz” was truly an inspiring but very tragic story. I, for the most part, felt a sense of being proud of what Aaron stood for and fought for but by the end, I was very much discouraged and even a bit afraid. One part that particularly stood out to me during the documentary was right around 1 hour and 12/13 minutes in and the documentary was discussing Aaron’s role in fighting the SOPA Bill that Congress was trying to introduce that would essentially tighten the reins on censorship on the internet. I think what makes this part so significant was the fact that the threat of going to prison was looming over his head yet he saw an opportunity to continue to fight for what he believed in, even though it looked really bleak. My dream is to become a lawyer and Aaron’s political activism inspires me. One person can make a difference in the world and watching how his effort led to the “SOPA Blackout Day”, the number of people who signed petitions and protested against the government for a cause makes me feel even more sure of my dream of being a lawyer can help to make a change in the world. The government did make an example out of Aaron, but he is also a symbol of what standing up for what you believe in can go a long way, no matter the obstacles. Open Access can save lives.

Assignment #5 Domain Names!

Domain names are really tricky

I’ve been struggling with this assignment and that’s partly why I’ve been putting it off. I honestly could not think of domain names that would be interesting, catchy, or speak to what I would want to represent my website, but, I think I’ve finally figured it out. This is really new for me and I’ve never thought about the intricate details behind building a website and figuring out domain names sounds fairly easy but it takes time to really come up with something. Hopefully, one of these options is a good choice.

Potential Domain Names
  • bestdayever.com – This option is inspired by one of my favorite songs by Mac Miller and it felt right.
  • everydaybytashema.com – This option infuses my middle name which is very special to me and a few ideas of what I want my website to be about.
  • pursuitofhappiness.com – This option is inspired by one of my favorite songs by Kid Cudi.
  • regulardegularlife.com – This option once again is in line with what I want out of my website.
  • thereslifeoutside.com – This option once again is in line with what I want out of my website.

These examples represent good examples of the website I will build because the idea I have for my website is a tiny corner on the internet dedicated to everyday, regular life that promotes positivity and happiness. Someplace someone out there can relate to and give them a bit of joy. I want my website to be an infusion of my interest in Sims, gaming, politics, movies/music, sneakers, and such but in a light heartful way. I am really open to exploring different avenues with this website. I’m really excited about this new “digital” chapter, this is very new to me so I’m also very hesitant about producing quality content that can connect with people.

Websites I Like:
  • Simscommunity.info – This is probably one of my go-to websites just because I play a lot of Sims and it keeps me updated about anything sims-related.
  • Sneakernews.com – This website I enjoy popping onto now and then to see updates, release information, and such on new sneakers.
  •  Wizardingworld.com – This website is just for my inner Harry Potter self, it’s basically a fan club website.

Assignment #4 – Digital Storytelling Project Flexibility

The DS106 Assignment Repository has many interesting assignments based on the various media types. The ones I chose to blog about really piqued my interest and forced me out of my comfort zone. The first assignment is under the “design” section. I chose the assignment that required you to create a VHS tape for a film that was released after 2005 and make it look like an 80s era tape. I was very excited when I saw this assignment because I immediately thought about the original Star Wars movies. I decided to try my hand at this one and it was not that easy. I did not have the skills required to complete this task but I gave it a go. I utilized Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create my 80s styled VHS tape.

my completed version. I tried my best and I really like it.

The next assignment I chose is under the 3D Printed Assignments. I selected the “Create A House” one because I immediately thought about building in the Sims and it’s something I do almost every day.

I believe we will be doing quite a bit of these assignment this semester and I can see why. They really force you to engage with the media type and tell a story in a way you didn’t think of before. The VHS tape was different, cool but challenging. I had so many ideas but trying to figure out how to actually produce them was interesting, to say the least. It took a lot of fidgeting and researching. I am now a bit familiar with some of the tools in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, a lot of which I played around with till I got it. Overall I am very pleased I gave it a try and I can’t wait to learn more about these softwares and sharping my new skills!

Assignment #3 – Memes . . . Tis It Art? or Tis it Not?

“Are Memes Art?” is the question the internet continues to debate and as with many wars in the history of the world, there are always two main sides, and I personally in this on-going battle choose the side of MEMES BEING ART!

There are varying definitions of what constitutes “ART” and based on several definitions, internet memes fit into many categories of what is traditional art. According to Merriam-Webster, art is “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic options”. Simply put, Art helps one to express themselves in creative ways, and like me and many others, MEMES help us to express our inner thoughts, beliefs, opinions, and ideas.

So  . . .  YES!

argue with yourself

I personally see memes as being a good thing for art. It has opened up a new realm of artistry, comedy, self-expression, and communication in an age of technology. Not everyone is good at traditional art like painting, drawing, etc. but memes give people the opportunity to create something unique, in their own vision but much easier to grasp. It’s not an “exclusive” club or something that people gatekeep.

Memes are not just for self-expression, it’s much more than art itself as well. Memes are therapeutic, and a cultural sensation that I don’t think will go away. For example, a trend on social media is to keep track of what meme went viral for the month, like a “meme calendar”.

Just to end off this blog, I’d like to share some of my favorite memes as of right now and one I made for CT101.

Assignment #2 – My GIF Reaction Story to CT101!

Finding CT101 Was Like Discovering Dreamland!

discovering a whole new world

Let’s be honest when someone asks me if I’m doing okay, my reaction is always the same. “No, I’m not, I’ve been in online school since last year March and quite frankly it’s getting on my nerves.” As a senior who is graduating this year, I am more than ecstatic to be done with this form of learning but I had to get through one last semester, and finding electives is very frustrating, to say the least.

helppp

However . . . when I was about to completely give up on finding a course that would not only be fun but engaging my sister recommended CT101 and it was the best thing to happen to me for spring 2021 (Woohooo)!

On the first day of CT101, I was very much excited about the opportunity to express myself creatively. I always wanted to take a Fine Arts course for my last semester, something where I could paint but COVID -19 had other plans (lol) but . . . listening to Professor Seslow describe the course gave me a breath of fresh air!

WOOOHOOOO!

This course by far is my most exciting, intriguing, and mentally stimulating one. My other courses are very much constant reading, taking quizzes, endless slides after slides of information being shoved into my brain, and professors lecturing for hours. It is quite boringgg! I could hardly stay awake.

me in my classes bored for dear life
Making Gifs is Sooo Coool

So far this course has surpassed my expectations (mind blown). I never thought about learning to make my gifs for someone who uses them every day. I am equally excited about learning to make memes and other ways of communicating on the internet. This form of creative course was something I initially did not think I would take, in part because I prefer painting but I am so happy I gave this a try. I look forward to what else this course and Professor Seslow have in store!

happy dance
Thank you, Professor!

Assignment #1 – What Makes You Happy on the Internet?

The internet is  . . .

how I view the internet

to say the least, but I do find that various content online does give me happiness. I love memes and I have a full album in my photos dedicated to collecting them.

coming up with GOT season 8 endings

I also find the internet to be very much chaotic but there is a space or niche for everyone. For example, tv-show stans or gamers. I myself remember being apart of the whole Game of Thrones fan theories, especially on Twitter.

Currently, I find a lot of happiness on the internet from Twitter because it’s a meme gold mine but you do come across pieces that make you laugh and think a bit deeper. I was recently on Twitter and I came across this video and it made me laugh so much. It honestly brought a lot of joy that day but it also made me think about how true this situation is. We live in such a digital era, where our devices are constantly being tracked, recorded, etc., and sometimes we don’t even realize. We would google or search the web for things we want and speak to others about something we want and then later see ads advertising said product to us. It always freaks me out but this video turned it into humor and I enjoyed that. Could you imagine actually resorting to ad tracking to find a date online?

I want to share a couple of memes that I found to be very funny and gave me some joy this week as well. I hope you guys enjoy them as much as I did.

British Twitter was not pleased with this one but I couldn’t stop laughing at it.
this one also was very funny because it made me think of women and how we actually ask these questions … “but why me?” or “would you love me still if I was a worm?”
