Final Blog Post

The final week of the semester never has failed to be the saddest. Even though summer is beginning and many are excited to start heading to the beach or party, its always sad to finish a your favorite courses. This class really expanded my creativity and so far has been my favorite course so far and I’m sadden that it has come to an end.

From learning how to make blog posts to creating our very own websites with our own domain name, this class has been full of our own creativity and is why its been my favorite. Being a Communication Technology major this is the class that starts off my major and if this is how most of my CT classes are going to be like I am very excited to sign up for these classes.

In terms of the grade I deserve I will be honest with myself, this has not been a good semester for me. During the middle of the semester I lost someone very close to me back in Colombia and traveled back there to attend all the services and be with my family. I did not have the best internet there and would find myself having the worst connection and would frequently miss classes and be forced to go to internet cafes whenever I had the chance. Of course there should be no excuse as to having missing work which is why I tried to make up for all the work I have missed for all of my classes. At most I think a C is what I earned with the late work and missing posts but even with this being my worst semester in terms of grades I still had a lot of fun with most of my classes and with CT 101 I knew it was going to be fun from the very beginning.

The Gif post and the making our own meme post were both my favorites apart from making our own website. These two things are apart of the modern social media and even if it doesn’t seem important it’s still good skills to have and you could make many people laugh with them!

I also finally completed my website! It took me a while to come up with something I wanted to make a website out of but then I came across a New York Times article and remembered I always wanted to try journalism. I struggled a lot with the customization with the website because it was a bit confusing but in the end I was able to come up with a simple but fun design that still gave it a journalistic feeling. Making my stories/blog posts was also very fun and I took a lot of inspiration from the New York Times and I even took some of my own photos as well as interviewed some people!

I made stories on restaurants during the pandemic and a fire that recently happened in my neighborhood and it was a very fun experience and I have decided to keep my website up as well as continue updating it. I’m not a journalism major but it felt really nice to try something new and I definitely would not of done this had I not taken this class.

Thank you to all my classmates and especially to the Professor for making this a fun course, I wish I had been more apart of it but during the time that I was it was a great experience that gave me a lot of new useful skills. I hope everyone has a great summer!

Picking a Domain Name!

I am finally in the process of making my own website! I wont lie, I have missed weeks of work and progress in this class and have fallen behind but I am now in the process of planning this website and I have decided that I wanted to stem away from what I focus on at school and try something new that I’ve always wanted to try!

Before my father came to the U.S he was worked in journalism in Colombia and would tell me about the various  stories that he would write about, this has always inspired me to make my own stories and maybe make my own website commenting on news stories around me. So this became the perfect opportunity for me to create that website and I’m very excited to get started.

My first order of business is to pick a domain name. I am planning on writing stories centered around my neighborhood, Jackson Heights since it’s such a diverse neighborhood with something always going on around here. Or maybe i’ll expand even further and use all of Queens and use any neighborhoods within Queens. So far the names I have are:

IntheHeights

NowinHeights

QueensJornalism

StoriesinQueens

NowinQueens

Customizing My Page!

So I’ve decided to put some of the posts assigned to us all together to make it easier and work on this post and update it as I go along with the process. I have decided to go with the name NowinQueens as I have finally finished my 2 posts on my website which feature two different locations from around Queens. I had written down some drafts for my post and I’m now customizing the page itself. So far it has been a little difficult to work around the customization options as I want it to look more journalistic but with the help of some videos I was able to get the simple look I wanted and even published my posts on to the website! It has a nice light orange background along with a picture that represented what I wanted to focus on in my website. I’m very excited to finally share it with everyone and plan on working on it and giving it some final touches!

Just a little sneak peak into my website at http://NowinQueens.com

Along with my website are my two News Stories that I put the most work in on and cover 2 news stories from around Queens with Interviews included!

Working with Photoshop

Earth

I thought choosing  a project would of been difficult. So many choices and me being the indecisive person that I am, I was worried. As I opened up the assignments page I opened up Visual Assignments first since I wanted to go in order and to my surprise the first assignment was perfect for me. It involved using photoshop to make effects with some text and it was perfect. I knew how to work around photoshop but never tried this text effect so it was fun learning how to do it.

First I viewed some quick youtube videos on how to create the effect and this is what I was able to come with. It was really fun working around some new techniques with Photoshop and I hope to use them more for other projects.

Working on Album art?

Create Rad Album Art from Photos

After choosing in the visual assignment section, I decided to work on the design assignment section and found this one. I think this is a fun assignment to work on because it deals a lot more with creativity and even photography of my own so for this assignment it might be more difficult but it will worth it in the end! Both these projects will help with my Photoshop skills immensely.

Can Memes be Art?

What are memes?

One of the first things anyone with access to the internet discover on their journey of surfing the web are these funny pictures with subtitles on them. What are these hilarious pictures called? These memes have been on the internet for what seems as  long as our grandparents have been around!

These memes are usually pictures or videos with funny context and posted online to make others laugh and can be about pretty much anything you can think of. But the question is, are these memes considered art? Do these memes that people use to express their selves fall under art?

In the article, The Rise of Memes as an Art Form by Alice Oh, Kash Jordan who is a LA based rapper has curated two exhibitions featuring memes. “Kash considers memes to be a form of pop art and draws a parallel to Andy Warhol’s work, which often involved appropriating images from pop culture, not unlike the way memes are created today.” Memes often use a lot of modern pop culture to convey the message of the picture.

Memes are definitely art.

The definition of art is different for everyone and that’s why memes being art is such a debated topic. For me, art is a way to express yourself or an idea through various creative activities or medias. Memes are a part of internet culture where anyone with internet access can convey an idea just by simply putting a funny picture with some subtitle. Although memes are being criticized for being called art in a few years I’m sure it would be more widely accepted for art.

Assignment 2 GIFS!

Gif or JIF?

On enrolling for CT101 I had no idea what it would be about. I was not sure what to expect. The last semester I took CT 160 and it was all about User Experience Design and creating websites/apps that were user friendly. I had actually worked with this type of blogging website so I was very familiar on how to use it. But after our professor for CT101 explained it, I knew instantly I would love this class

Creativity to me is the best element a class can have. Freedom to make something excites me and after learning about what we will be doing in this class and even what we have done so far is amazing.

Being able to make something from your own imagination is a good feeling but being able to also see other peoples work to inspire more ideas is great and that’s why this class has to be my favorite of the semester.

This class has been different than any other class I have taken. It feels more like a fun group project with everyone contributing to make something amazing.  I honestly love reading other peoples post and getting to know them through these blog posts because you see more of their personality with gifs and  pictures and is a much more effective way to get to know them than posting on a discussion board. I cant wait for the next few weeks!

What makes me happy on the internet?

Hello everyone, my name is Andres Fernandez and this question really had me thinking about it for a long time and I really had to think about what gives me the most enjoyment when I open up the internet. I use the internet for almost everything from video games to random YouTube videos to weird random things I want to buy from amazon but the thing that I have been enjoying the most right now is watching videos/tutorials on how to use programs such as Photoshop or Adobe Premier Pro and create something amazing. Just a few months ago I was finally able to buy my own computer and the first thing I bought was Photoshop. I was horrible at it and had no clue on where to begin but I saw so many YouTube tutorials that really caught my eye and made me want to learn so much more such as:

It’s videos like these that helped me learn on becoming better in Photoshop and really gave me a really big interest in photo manipulation and give it more of a fantasy look on them. I was able to finally finish on a small project that I’ve been working on and I’m excited to learn more on Photoshop and I’m also working on learning Adobe Premier Pro to edit videos. The internet is the best place to learn new things such as hobbies and also to express your creativeness and that’s what really makes me happy to see every time I go on it.

This is what I was able to create on photoshop and I’m excited to keep trying and get better with these programs.
