As the semester’s halfway point draws near, let me take a moment to consider my experience in CT 101 thus far. I’ll explore my development, lessons discovered, and opportunities for growth in this post, focusing on important issues that influence my experience in this digital storytelling course.
How am I doing in CT101?
When I think back on my performance in CT 101, I think I really participated in the readings and assignments. I’ve tried to contribute to discussions and engage in activities, and I’ve consistently shown up for both in-person and virtual sessions.
What have I learned and retained the most?
The significance of narrative is the central idea that has struck a chord with me during this entire experience. Crafting interesting narratives across various digital platforms requires excellent storytelling, whether it be achieved through GIFs, memes, or classic narrative styles. I’ve learned new techniques for interacting with audiences and delivering ideas that stick by using the power of memes and GIFs.
What new skills have I developed, cultivated, and displayed regularly in my weekly posts?
I’ve developed a new skill set in my weekly blog entries that revolves around making memes and GIFs and using them to improve storytelling. I’ve refined my skill to create visually appealing memes that go well with my written reflections through testing and practice.
I’ve experimented with several meme forms and themes using apps like Imgflip and Giphy, learning how to successfully modify text, images, and humor to deliver messages. Through this approach, I’ve been able to hone my eye for picking memes that align with my blog post themes and speak to my readers.
In addition, I have dabbled in GIF creation, using programs like Adobe Photoshop and Giphy’s GIF Maker to create lively and captivating images. Through experimenting with timing and animation methods, I’ve developed the ability to create GIFs that enhance the richness and energy of my narrative endeavors.
Including GIFs and memes in my weekly blogs has improved my grasp of visual communication principles and broadened my creative horizons. I’ve used design principles like typography, color theory, composition, and timing to make sure my GIFs and memes express ideas effectively and elicit the feelings I want from my viewers.
I’ve proven through persistent practice and iteration that I can easily incorporate GIFs and memes into my blog posts, which improves readers’ experiences with the narrative as a whole. My ability to interact creatively with digital audiences and enhance the impact of my narrative content has increased because to this newfound skill set.
What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class?
I had little exposure to the artistic possibilities of GIFs and memes in digital storytelling prior to joining CT 101. I didn’t realize how important of a role they played in influencing online culture and communication; I just saw them as internet junk.
As a result of actively participating in the course materials and exercises, I now recognize memes and GIFs as effective narrative techniques. I now know how to use their striking visuals and cultural connections to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences.
I’ve also learned about the technical side of making and editing GIFs and memes, from choosing the right template to being proficient with editing tools. My comprehension of digital media production has expanded as a result of this expertise, and I now possess useful abilities for expressing concepts in an engaging visual way.
All in all, CT 101 has changed the way I view memes and GIFs, transforming them from being just online fads to vital elements of modern digital storytelling. Now that I’m aware of their capacity to amuse, educate, and prompt thinking, I can’t wait to use them creatively in my next projects.
I think working on a variety of projects will help me learn new tools and techniques in addition to improving my narrative abilities.
Project 1: Storytelling with Existing Skills
The DS106 assignment “Create a GIF from a Movie Scene” is the first project that drew my eye. I think I can complete this work because I have some expertise with basic graphic design and film editing.
Making a GIF out of a moment from a favorite film is required for this project. In order to do this, the pertinent section must be extracted, edited for effect and brevity, and then saved in a GIF file.
The storytelling technique used in movies has always captivated me. My goal with this project is to capture the essence of a situation in a few seconds of visual narration, while also allowing me to express my creativity.
In order to finish this job, I’ll need to extract the scene, change its length, and add any required effects using video editing software. I’ll also use graphic design tools to enhance the visual quality of the GIF.
Project 2: Learning a New Media Type
The Daily Create assignment “Create a SoundCloud Recording of a Poem” is intriguing to me. I’ve done some audio editing before, but I haven’t looked into poetry recitation as a kind of artistic expression.
For this task, you will need to choose a poem, record yourself reciting it, and then post the audio recording on SoundCloud. The intention is to use tone and vocal delivery to communicate the poem’s feelings and topics.
Poetry has always had a special place in my heart, and reading it aloud, in my opinion, gives it a deeper meaning. This project provides a rare chance to investigate the aural elements of storytelling and test out different voice expression and modulation techniques.
I’ll need to become comfortable with recording and editing audio with programs like Audacity in order to complete this work. I’ll also concentrate on honing my vocal delivery so that I can accurately portray the tone and significance of the selected poetry.
Importance of Skills Development
These kinds of creative initiatives are crucial for developing emergent storytelling abilities and learning new techniques. By pushing ourselves to create in a variety of media, we develop adaptation and versatility in addition to broadening our creative horizons.
I want to do at least two projects a week this semester, alternating between tasks that test my current abilities and ones that present fresh difficulties. This well-rounded strategy will guarantee ongoing improvement and development while encouraging a more thorough comprehension of narrative methods.
Completion of Project: “Create a GIF from a Movie Scene”
As part of this blog post, I have completed the “Create a GIF from a Movie Scene” assignment. Below is the GIF I created from a scene in the classic movie “Kinives out“:
How am I doing in CT101? In CT 101, I believe I’m doing fairly well. Each week I make sure to turn in every assignment that is posted every Tuesday for class.
What have I learned and retained the most? What I’ve learned and retained the most would have to be including GIFS in majority of my posts while having hyperlinks to back up what I'm saying. An example is for assignment 2 I included a hyperlink of the well known TV show Family Guy” . I included it for reference to anybody who has never watched the show before. I included it to explain where the GIF originates from. I included it for reference to anybody who has never watched the show before. I included it to explain where the GIF originates from.
What new skills have I developed , cultivated and displayed regularly in my weekly posts? The new skills I have developed in my weekly posts are my story-telling skills. For example for assignment 4, where we had to discuss our passion. I feel like the word choices I used and the images included made people get a glimpse of who I am as a person and the things I enjoy. Here's my assignment below.
What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class? Before taking this class I wasn’t sure exactly how to make my own meme. I didn’t know there are lots of websites out there that will help with the process of making one. I used the GIPHY website to help me along with the zoom videos Professor Ryan puts up.
What grade do I believe I am maintaining and why do I deserve that grade? I believe I deserve a B for a grade for putting my creativity into every blog post.![]()
Do I see my weekly blogging work expanding creatively? If so, please explain why – or am I stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time, how will I change that? Every week I do believe my weekly blogging work has expanded creatively. I do think I could change up the way I format the posts, whether it be with adding different fonts and colors. In fact I changed fonts and even the color of the texts!
Are there any assignments that you are missing? If so, list them. There aren’t any missing assignments that I’m missing.![]()
Are you commenting regularly on your classmates' posts? Are you responding back to comments given to you by the professor & your classmates? I am commenting regularly on my classmates' posts. I try to aim for at least 2 comments per assignment.
Are you participating during the class time? If not, explain why. I am not often participating during class time because I’m not present most days. It could be as simple as me coming to class and making a comment based on the assignment the professor is going over. Even offering commentary whenever the professor asks a question.
This is the time to be accountable. How will you make needed improvements? I need to start attending class more frequently if I want to get better. I've been absent for a few days, but now that the semester is almost over, I'll stop. Furthermore, attendance definitely has a significant impact on my final grade. Getting a good grade in this course will help my GPA because I'm also graduating in May. That will also start with me going to sleep much earlier to be able to wake up.![]()
The first day of Ct 101 was surprising and I am interested in learning more from this class. This is my first time coming across a class like this and curious of what I am going to learn and be exposed to as the semester goes on.
2. Did you like hearing about the course and its creative content? How did it make you feel?
https://media.giphy.com/media/26AHrS5Zr4erxSxsQ/giphy.gif?cid=ecf05e47shbfvnuqbw3z315ou4hd8b1utitziuadv5hvgc8m&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g
I like hearing about this course and it’s creative content. I am new to digital storytelling in which being able to create your own story online is great. The course and content has me intrigued.
3. How does CT 101 compare to your other classes so far?
https://media.giphy.com/media/1UL5wvG8EeOli/giphy.gif?cid=790b76116y69nt8xzpxue056y5bjehwqq7vl28o5e4ghd9i7&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g
So far Ct 101 is one of my favorite classes. because the workload is not heavy compared to my other classes. Also from being in this class, this class allows me to be myself, and to express myself which is helping me to build up my creativity.
4. What are the creative potentials for this class?
The creative potentials for this class is being able to learn new skills and tools to apply in my life and career. When we master skills, it will be with us forever, and feel that the reward of learning pays off.
It’s interesting that I have an opportunity to learn skills that use Internet tools. The idea of being able to use tools to create something the way how you visualize is something that is beyond words to me.
After browsing through the website for the DS 106 Assignment Repository, an assignment that caught my eye is underneath the visual assignment category. It was labeled “name that flower” with a picture of a yellow with the center being red. This would be rather easy to do because google is FREE!. I would just type into the description of the flower on google and pick which one matches it the best.
The flower is a Golden Tickseed. For those of you just finding out about this flower, the Golden Tickseed is native in the southern parts of the United States. They are well known for their bright yellow petals “with maroon centers..
The second assignment I came across comes from the same website and it’s a design assignment. It is titled “Missing Person”.
The prompt is “Create a missing posters flyer for a fictional movie/show character, made-up person, animal, or a real person. Be sure to include a picture, the name, characteristics, and last seen date and place. Let your imagination do the talking for this poster”.
I’ve never done something like this before. Making sure everything lines up, picking out the different fonts. In addition, making sure everything is visually appealing might be a little tricky.
I do consider myself creative. Storytelling plays a huge part in making this as well, the idea of making a fictional character that draws the attention of my classmates will be fun.
I believe I should be doing the minimum of three and the maximum of five for the number of projects to do this semester. In terms of storytelling skills, it will; help me to create engaging content not only for myself but for the rest of the students
In the description, the person did not include what type of websites to make posters, so I did some research and the best I found were Picsart and Canva.
First I went on Canva and selected a blank page and here’s what I added from there.
From here I made up my own fictional character but I’m not sure what to put yet. I also made one for the backstory on how my character went missing.
I wasn’t sure whether to have AI generate the image for me or draw the image by hand.
Here is the AI generated image. I used the website Gencraft. It allowed to type in the description I made up and it generated an image. It has some pretty cool features including making the picture 3D, Cartoon, and even in watercolor.
First I go on DDG to find an interesting landmark that catches and I’d want to go to.
The image that caught my interest is this fountain with Roman Baroque-style sculptures, it is called the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) and is located in Italy, Rome.
First I download the image and then I go to Lunapic, my favorite image editing website.
And then I search for a font color and shape I think would match up nicely with the image and…
Voila!
A destination poster.
2. Another project I don’t know how to do yet but would love to is the video game project unfortunately I cannot figure out how to make it.
Alright! Let’s reflect what we learned from the past 7 and a half weeks of class 🙂
2. What I’ve learned/retained from this class is gifs, memes and ds106 because as you can see I can input gifs in blogs just fine as well as adding my own memes here too, I use https://tenor.com/search/quby-stickers as well as http://giphy.com to do my memes there B).
3. As I said before the skills I developed was inserting gifs and/or memes by using it’s link (as long as it has .gif at the end) it will work and you can edit it before inserting your gifs/memes and it’s always in Ryan’s weekly assignment post because after having details out there for all of us to see and read at the end of an answer we would put gifs and/or memes.
4. We can use photoshop in this class as well as insert it into our blogs which is something i never knew before! :O
5. A++ XD I’m kidding but most certainly an A+ for my efforts and showing up to class on time as well as my work sent in on time.
6. HEY! My creativity in my blogs is never a loop I use different Quby gifs to be relatable with my emotions. Don’t make me send Quby after you! -_-
7. No assignments missing
8. I don’t comment to my classmates posts I actually have nothing to say lol but if it’s from you Ryan I would respond back to you and if my classmates reply to me ill respond back as well (but it depends if I have time).
9. No because I start my blog post right away by reading it’s instructions carefully
That’s all for today everyone! As always keep it real and see you next time!

are memes art to me memes are art but not at the same time when I think about art. I think about a museum , a canvas were you paint your muse or what you feel not just taking a video and putting a caption on it . when searching for are memes art https://spokenvision.com/can-memes-be-considered-art/. (link 1) Showcases why some consider that memes are art but not at the same time memes do have colorful images like some of the real art were use too , around the 1950s they used popular media as inspo but also states memes have no artistic value so how can it be considered art with no value , and theres always a new meme popping up every second how is this art with a new one coming out every second no one will know the original piece .and get bored very quickly https://drippingquills.com/t/can-memes-be-considered-art/14328 (link 2) Memes are here to stay but are they art. to me there not there just little clips of videos that express how your feeling in the moment ,to me memes are going to stay which is good but ,at one point there going to die out .Memes are a good way to express yourself with friends or family but in a professional setting nope .If your calling out of work would you send your boss a meme ,how would they react ,imagine applying for a job with a meme do you think your getting that job .Memes can be used in a conversation but a whole story no .
Communication is the cornerstone of human interaction, connecting individuals across distances and bridging cultures and communities. In today’s digital age, the landscape of communication is constantly evolving, shaped by an array of innovative technologies that redefine how we connect and engage with one another. As a passionate advocate for harnessing the power of communication technology, I embark on a journey to explore the myriad ways in which these tools enrich our lives and empower us to forge meaningful connections in an increasingly interconnected world.
What is Communication Technology?
Communication technology encompasses a broad spectrum of tools and platforms designed to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas. From social media networks and messaging apps to video conferencing software and virtual reality experiences, these technologies enable instantaneous communication across vast distances, transcending barriers of time and space.
Gathering Multimedia Elements
I’ve learned that communication technology can encourage teamwork, creativity, and community development through my research into it. These technologies are now essential to my personal and professional lives, whether I’m interacting with loved ones on the other side of the world or working in real-time collaboration with colleagues.
My experience with communication technology has made me aware of its dual character, which can both empower and disenfranchise people. It is a tool that can bring people together as well as drive them apart. In an increasingly linked world, it is imperative that we use these tools with awareness and purpose, elevating voices, bridging gaps, and promoting understanding.
Wow, here we are at the midpoint of our CT-101 semester! Time… goes by waaaaaay too fast.. Let’s take a minute to reflect, let’s take a minute to regroup, catch up, let’s induce a class reflection!
Let us ask ourselves the following questions, and reflect:
“How am I doing in CT101? What have I learned? What new skills have I developed, cultivated and displayed regularly? How do I assess my performance through a self-reflection in this class?”
**PS – in person attendance in this class is mandatory and counts towards your final grade. Please be accountable for any absences.**
The assessment part is very tangible and clear as we have been producing results over the last 7.5 weeks in the form of blogging, commenting, creating visual imagery, discussion via various forms and class participation.
Let’s take stock, follow me below:
The CT 101 Course Schedule page is where everything is – this is the CT 101 HUB – this is the space where all the assignments and learning details take form each week – (just in case you forgot) – this is where you can recap and catch up on all assignments (and also access all of the class recordings) – https://ct101.commons.gc.cuny.edu/course-schedule/
In fact, before we move into the next phase of our course, I want to take a week and reflect upon what has already been accomplished, as well as take accountability for what might be missing and in need of improvement.
Let’s title this next post:
Assignment #6 – The Mid-Semester Reflection Post
In a new blog post titled:
“Assignment #6 – The Mid-Semester Reflection”, please assess and reflect upon your last 7.5 weeks here in CT 101.
**Please answer and address the following questions below, and also provide hyperlinks back to all of your previous completed blog posts.
This will help illustrate some of the questions below as you tell a compelling story here in the CT 101 blog space: (the use of imagery, media and hyperlinks are helpful and needed but please don’t default to using too many GIFs or memes to fill in all the gaps.)
How am I doing in CT101?
What have I learned and retained the most?
What new skills have I developed , cultivated and displayed regularly in my weekly posts?
What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class?
What grade do I believe I am maintaining and why do I deserve that grade?
Do I see my weekly blogging work expanding creatively? If so, please explain why – or am I stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time, how will I change that?
Are there any assignments that you are missing? If so, list them.
Are you commenting regularly on your classmates posts? Are you responding back to comments given to you by the professor & your classmates?
Are you participating during the class time? If not, explain why.
This is the time to be accountable. How will you make needed improvements?
**PS reminder #2 – in person attendance in this class is mandatory and counts towards your final grade. Please be accountable for any absences.**
Have fun with this!
Feel free to include useful relatedness in the form of links, images, video or Make Something New to express how you feel about this post! (a technique learned from the dS106 assignment bank perhaps?)
***Next week we will begin talking about Domain Names and Web Design!
Memes have permeated online communication, serving as the currency of expression in the broad world of the internet. They capture humor, criticism, and occasionally deep insights in a single picture or brief video. However, what effect do memes have on narrative, art, and communication? Do they have more meaning than just being temporary diversion? Let’s examine the various facets of memes and how they influence the story we tell online.
Memes and Art
Art has always been a window into society, revealing its subtleties and essence. Because memes are transient, they can be used as contemporary canvases by both artists and non-artists. Memes democratize creativity and enable anybody with an idea to add to the cultural dialogue, despite the claims of some that they diminish the value of art. Memes challenge conventional ideas of artistic merit by erasing distinctions between high and low art.
Memes and Communication
Memes are the ideal tool for presenting complicated ideas in an easily understood manner because modern communication is centered around visual signals and succinctness. Memes bring people from different cultures together through common humor and references, overcoming language boundaries. Memes are spreading quickly, but this also brings up challenges with false information and oversimplifying complicated subjects. The fine line between entertainment and disinformation necessitates critical participation from both producers and users.
Memes as Storytelling
Memes are no different from humans in that they are storytellers by nature. Memes have the ability to tell stories that connect with people all around the world, whether they are image macros or viral challenges. Memes condense narratives into digestible fragments, frequently use intertextuality and cultural allusions to effectively communicate their meaning. Memes, whether they’re a collection of amusing pictures or a well-written picture with a caption, have the power to arouse feelings and start discussions in ways that traditional narrative just cannot.
Personal Experience
Throughout my digital travels, I’ve come across a ton of memes that have really stuck with me. Every meme has a unique narrative and captures the spirit of the times, ranging from the ridiculous to the thought-provoking. The meme “Distracted Boyfriend,” which shows a man staring at another woman while his girlfriend watches with disapproval, is one that really speaks to me. This meme demonstrates the potency of visual storytelling by humorously capturing the intricacies of interpersonal interactions.
