Assignment #1 – Internet Happiness?

Assignment #1 –

What Makes You Happy on the Internet?

Now that you are signed up for the commons and the CT101 website, its time to begin experimenting with the wordpress blogging editor! Remember, all of the assignment content that you see here is an example 🙂

Your goal for this week will be to read and follow the info / links listed in our class calendar for Week #2. Absorb the information and then begin to prepare and gather all of needed media, images, links and content to create and publish your first blog post here on our class website!

(This assignment was created by Professor Michale Smith a few years ago, it still holds true as a great example and ice-breaker for our first blogging assignment.)

Prof. Smith asserts;

“In your first blog post, take the time to introduce anything you want about yourself and describe a piece of the internet that is “making you happy” this week. Share what the content is about, the media format, and the online space in which is was discovered. Make sure it’s something you can ’embed’ in your post and be sure to link back to the original source of the the item.

Below is an example:

discovered recently a writer who made side-by-side comparisons of frames from the Simpsons with frames from the original movies that inspired the cartoon. I love this kind work because it shows how culture is seemingly endlessly recycled and remixed.

Here’s the original, famous “shower scene” from the 1960 film Psycho:

Here is another example of this assignment that Prof. Seslow made from the Fall of 2020, hope this helps as inspiration 🙂

That’s Nyle DiMarco below, he’s a Deaf Actor and Artist, he is showing us how to say: “Nice to Meet You” in American Sign Language. Im also Deaf and Hard of Hearing, so you can expect to learn some ASL and see more ASL GIFs this semester! I hope that you like animated GIFS, we are going use a lot of them here, and make them too! We are going to spend a lot of time discussing ways that we communicate.

an animated GIF of Nyle DiMarco signing "Nice to Meet You" in American Sign Language

There is a lot of compelling content to cover, which will happen in many ways! Lets start this week with a real time Zoom class at 10AM (the zoom link and PW is already posted on our Blackboard course page and sent as an announcement to your CUNY e-mail address.) Keep in mind, there are two individual sections of this course that both follow the same assignment criteria and also uses the same class website. You are only required to follow the day and section that you registered for, but if you wish, you can join in more. I will explain all of this as we go forward with our first week or two of classes.

And we are all here to do the same for each other. Our class is a community! The nature of our course is already acquainted with the structure that you see here. (This Internet thing…) A big part of our class is exploring your creativity and being experimental with the Internet! Plus, we will learn about the evolving array of digital tools that are available to us. We do quite a bit of the creative work from our own personal work spaces as we integrate the class work into our lives. Please know, I will screen-record each and every assignment’s description, how-to’s and tutorials and share those videos here on our website. Please think of this website as a repository of information, energy and inspiration for the course (and beyond!)

The Class Website – Our class website takes place on the CUNY Academic Commons! You will soon discover that the Commons is a huge resource and regular source of inspiration and community! Im excited to share this with you all.

**PS -I moderate all the comments to make sure that spam bots don’t spam us into oblivion! If may take a few minutes before your comment shows up, no need to submit it twice if you don’t see it appear right away :))

Also, please explore this website, read through the syllabus and some of the course resources, it will be super helpful in the next coming weeks.

Last Reflection

To summarize  this semester, it has been really different, challenging and a learning experience. This class has taught me a lot on communication technology even though I knew it had to do with technology hence the name of the class lol, but I learned a lot during the semester.

However……….

Im SUUPPERR HAPPY that this semester is FINALLY over!!

However Im a little sad that this class will be over along with the semester because technology is what I’m into and I liked this class so far. However being able to communicate with it will not only benefit me but also other people in the future.  I enjoyed making gifs and trying out Vapor wave (which was a challenge  so I used an image instead with different filters).

Exhibit A

I really  like the fact that get to have my own website which I will definitely use from now on for all my art stuff and just to share feelings if I want to. My website is not much right now sadly but it does have some stuff about me and things that I did so far.

https://jazzyfeyproductions.com/

On the website here is a guide through the different menus:

The Home page with my image at the top and website intro

Then the About page which I show what I was involved in, in the past and my art that I did.

The Blog page where everything I did in class, I post it on my website to get feed back or for others to view.

And then my contact page that displays my email (which you cant see unless you press my site link).

For this class which I am grateful for I honestly feel I deserve a B or B+ because I tried to keep up with the class  and contact the professor when able to, even with all the frustrating technical difficulties I faced throughout the semester.  However, I know the energy I put into it and the fun that I had while completing the assignments. I am also thankful for the different technical lessons on copywriting and gifs and vapor wave. All of these lessons have prepared me for what I want to do in the future for my website. So Professor if you are reading this…thank you lol.

Final Blog post

What have I learned?

This is going to be one of the hardest assignment things for me to do, I feel like I have learned so much from this class that It will be hard to list but I will give it a go.

I will list everything that I learned in this class with Link or picture of the work that I have done.

Blogging I learned to created blog post on a already existing website like our class website , where I was able to created a variety of blog post and comment and view some of my classmates blog post as well.

Internet happiness

MEME’s  I learned a lot about MEME’s, if they are art or not. I learned how to create them using imugur. I created a mean defining MEME as an art.

GIF’s I learned how to created GIF’s using imugur , I was able to create a couple of GIF’s from my favorite TV show Game of throne check out my blog post on it.

Domain name I learned all I needed to know about Domain names and guess what? I was able to create my own isaacjim.com, I wrote a wonder blog post of my process on the CT 101 class website here is the link .

WordPress I was able to create and update my personal website portraying some of my school projects, Thanks to professor’s Seslow  Tutorial videos posted on the class website under Course schedule. Here is a Link to my awesome website.

Images bellow as well

VaporWave I learned a little about a new form of art called vaporwave Check out my post on it you might like it.

Copyright  I learned about a very important thing on the internet call copyright, it was great to hear others thoughts on in check out the class website for some of my classmates thoughts on it.

After listing most of the things that I learned in this class I do have to say that my favorite assignment was creating my website , the fact that I was able to create my own space on the internet from scratch was awesome!  and I will definitely keep updating it with other college projects assignments that I complete.

I feel like I was very successful while completing every assignment that I had to do, mainly because of the great professor that I had which took the time to create not only great blog post detailing every assignment that we had to do, but also tutorial videos, always kept the class involve and interesting. I am super excited to take future classes with him, please check put his website as he has some awesome content on it.

Grade  as for the grade that I feel like I deserve I would give myself an A only because I have to grade myself for the assignment. I believe that they are greater things to gain from a class than just a good grade and that is exactly what I think I gaining from this class more than just a grade.

Copyright

What is copyright?

“Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.”

That is the definition found on http.s://www.copyright.gov/ , to me this is just all a bunch of fancy words use to keep the creativity of the people to a minimum. What I define as copyright is when you can not publish something exact as it was created and take credit from it. If we get technical for example when it comes to music every song would be a violation of copyright because every word said on a song was once already said.

In the Tedtalk by Larry Lessig he states that “People participate in the creation and recreation of culture”. In my opinion to put a stop on the re-creation of an art is to stop culture from moving forward or developing.

I believe that as users of the web we should not pay much mind to copyrights because is going to set our creativity back we wont be able to add to the “culture” as  long as we give credit when its due we will be just fine, I  do not know who exactly but someone said “if you are getting fined than you are doing something right!”

VaporWave!!

VaporWaver?

WTH is this was my first thought my after watching some videos and looking at some examples I am still not 100 percent sure. Yes I got that right, I think that if I had to define it I would use the words art and classic, technology It is something completely new. I dont know is I would ever like to try something like this but below I would show some of my favorite that I found in the class gallery.

Week # 12 Website project

Who knew this could be so Fun!

So far the website is coming along great! I have been able to add a Gallery of the projects that I have done so far and even started transferring my post from CT101 class to my actual blog post section of the site bellow I will share some pictures but not forget to visit yourself.

Week # 11

WordPress tutorials on adding Social Media content into your blog posts, pages and sidebar widgets.

For this part of my website , I decide not to add a social media widget.  The main reason being that I do not have nothing of significance on my social media that I would like to showcase on my website. later on I do hope to have content on my social media worth showing on my website.

I did do many changes to the website. I created a gallery to show my projects and added achieves at the right side of the page, which I will show bellow

If you would like to see the page live just think this link

Mid-Semester Assessments

Halfway through the class already! This class has been super fun for me, one of the main reasons being that I have been able to follow my own schedule and complete the assignments at my own time.

What have I learned?

A lot! let me go into a little more detail for you my friend. Before starting this class I was super scared at things like Blogging, creating MEMES, creating GIFs and even creating my own Website.  Now we are here mid semester and I have learned all these things, not only have a learned to created MEMEs GIFs and blog post, but I do them weekly, as you can see in the class website.

I have learned all these skills and different tools thanks thanks to may CT 101 Professor , make sure to check his page out to see some of the awesome art works and animations that he has created.

I feel like for this class one of my strengths has been able to create MEMEs and GIFs, as I have created many different ones throughout the semester. Going ford ward I would like to learn more about WordPress , as we just started to learn using it and there still a lot of work to be done to my website.

Here is the work that I have done on my Website so far.

As for the Grade that I believe like I deserve in this class, I would say an A, for many reasons. I will list the 3 main ones bellow.

  1. I have completed every assignment so far
  2. I have learned so much from this class, as you can see on my blog post
  3. I believe that every student attending class this semester should be graded for effort not results, because of how hard this year has been and how we have to adapt due to COVID 19

Week # 9 Updating website

This has been a great experience for me this far. I was able to pick a domain name, which takes to God! was available (Isaacjim.com) and was able to host it through a wonderful and easy to use website.

Next comes the fun part!

I was able to change many features about the site. I created an awesome welcome page with a free to use imagine pixabay , a website that allows you to use images for your website for free.

Below I will be sharing a screenshot  of how the website is looking so far!

Of course I still have a lot of information to add and a lot of designing   to do, but I welcome the work as I been looking up to this since the semester started.

Week # 8

For me creating a Domain name has been super fun! To do this we used the website reclaimhosting.com , at first I thought it was going to be scary, how wrong was I. The professor from my CT 101 course created a great tutorial video that made the process fun and easy.

Next up!

Next up comes the part that I have been more excited in this process. Where I will be able to add menu, pictures, colors and a bunch of other things to my personal website, which will mainly suppose on the classes that I have taken relate to my major (Communication technology) and the projects that I have done for it.

What is Copyright?

Copyright is “Copyright is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the exclusive right to make copies of creative work, usually for a limited time. ”  in his tedtalk, Larry Lessig discusses how copyright laws have suffocated creativity. He makes it very clear that he is not saying that people should have the right to basically plagiarize someeone’s work, but the laws have made it hard to recreate someone’s work in a professional manner.

Something that Lessig said that stood out to me was, “Culture where creativity is consumed, but the consumer is not a creator.  A culture which is top-down, owned, where the vocal chords of the millions have been lost.”  This was interesting to me because the whole TedTalk was about how copyright has made it extremely difficult for children to express themselves without breaking the law.  Personally, I can see the necessity for copyright laws, but I also think that we monetize and criminalize everything.  I feel like copyright is a way for people to basically hoard creative content,

And while you should be protective over something you created, but I do not see the harm in someone being inspired by my work. I personally believe that the government likes to stick their nose in everything.  I see people who go live on Facebook who have to put a copyright notice in their message if they’re playing music, just so their content won’t get shut down.  That’s excessive. But at the same time, should we allow people to blatantly rip off other people’s creative content? There is definitely a middle ground, we just have to find it.

CT101 Final Blog Post / Charles Johnson

My experience during CT101 with Professor Ryan Seslow has been a positive learning experience with an emphasis on creativity, expressing yourself, and learning to work at an optimal pace. I have learned some valuable lessons from the disciplines of CT101 that I can use in all areas of my life. The class of CT101 has helped me navigate the online world in a positive way by showing me that my presence and ability to create makes me a significant influence on our future. CT101 is a good guide for harnessing our technology to create gifs, blog posts, participate in online learning spaces, communicate and discuss opinions, create a domain to build your own website, and other extremely important skills that give you the ability to make great change. I believe everyone’s participation in the online environment is an important mass interaction that holds the connection of humanity together. There is still a large portion of the world that does not participate in online interaction but with the advancement of “thousands of small satellites orbiting the earth to provide broadband internet service.”(C. Knight) the world of online interactions will grow exponentially.

Throughout the course we participated in lessons that showed us how to do many different things. This course has shown me how to register for a CUNY Academic Commons account. Creating this account was the first step that brought us all together to collaborate and learn together. Initially I didn’t like the website when I first joined the CT101 class. After realizing how accessible and chronologically organized the website was, I began enjoying picking up where I left my work later into the semester.

Another skill this class has shown me is how to create, edit, and publish our own posts. Creating our first post resembled the feeling of a first impression. This is because having the freedom to apply any gif, image, and video creates a unique personal connection with what you post. Your post reflects all of us in different ways by showing our values, interests, and preferences.

https://giphy.com/create/gifmaker

Although participation may have been lacking, this class has changed my outlook on responding and presenting your opinions to others. Sharing and discussing opinions is an important interaction because it gives us multiple perspectives. Having verbal interaction with experienced people is an advantage of online spaces. Commenting and replying in genuine conversation is an important advantage of online spaces.

Creating and sharing gif images was one of the highlights of CT101. It was a fun and relaxing project that made us find the fun in our assignments.  This set the tone for the rest of the semester because we realized that this class was a fun environment where we could express ourselves.

Storytelling assignments and projects that required detailed online research gave us the knowledge necessary in creating our own website domain and building a personal website. These assignments assisted in my website building through growing important habits such as adding hyperlinks, following video tutorials, and other important skills. These habits allowed me to illustrate my own website with the new program WordPress. Being introduced to WordPress was a confusing experience because there was so much information to consider when learning how to add new things into your website.

Helpful video tutorials and online explanations of the WordPress interface creates an efficient way of understanding how to customize your own website. Without the ease of online research, I would not be able to figure out how to function a WordPress website as easily as I did this semester.

I appreciate the encouragement to create that professor Seslow provided throughout CT101. Towards the end of the semester, I realized that we had the freedom to create anything we wanted by connecting it to our assignments. This encouragement inspired me to create my own Vaporwave banner for CT101 in one of our final assignments. This type of creative development and initiative to act on creative impulse is one of the most important purposes of the CT101 class. I believe creating throughout your career no matter what path, maintains innovative progress in all areas of development.

I believe I have participated in all areas of CT101 to receive an A- grade. Over the course of this semester, I have struggled with investing the ideal amount of time into all parts of my life. Finding a balance for living life in a fulfilling and progressive way is the most important aspect of our lives. This class has allowed us to learn our preferred working patterns. Analyzing the amount of time spent doing a task is a good implication of how proficient you are in that task. This analysis allows me to predict my work ethic for the following semesters. I think this class has shown me how much time I require to succeed in an area of study. Building my own website at my pace and learning how much work I can get done in an amount of time is very important during a pandemic. I was able to complete most of the given assignments while maintaining other areas of my life. These other areas include being a part of a functional family, having a reliable schedule, maintaining physical health, and staying mentally flexible. I believe I deserve an A- grade because this class has taught me that humans are very conscious beings that are capable of influencing the future in powerful ways. Having the ability to harness your true intuition is especially important for our future. Understanding yourself and where your creativity originates from can help you make a big impact. I believe being able to balance both areas of your life are significantly important when succeeding in class.

I am very happy with the outcome of my website “CreativesStayCurious”. The opportunity to create my own website has never presented itself to me and I am grateful enough to continue the development on my project. Creating visual representation is one of my greatest passions and being able to share that knowledge with other people is one of the advantages of online spaces. Overall, I have had a pleasant experience in CT101 I have been exposed to a lot of new digital skills and I plan to take more classes in this area of study.
