My Opinions on Copyright!
After watching the TED talk about copyright I was informed of so many different perspectives and viewpoints in terms of Copyright. And the narrator, Larry Lessig, did an excellent job at highlighting these two perspectives while staying true to what he believes. One of the quotes by him in particular that I really liked was, “We live life against the law”. This quote really stuck with me because it was something I never once realized til now. And after taking some time to think about it, I found a lot of truth to it.
Overall however, I would say I agree with Lessig but to an extent. There were plenty of things in his presentation that I heard and was shaking my head “Yes” to. A lot of people don’t realize how most of what we watch, do, listen to, play, and create came from something that has already been done before. And that doesn’t mean that people are trying to copy or plagiarize other works. When people see something or someone they are inspired by they first become or do that thing and then improve on it. Society continues to move forward because of the fact that as generations move on people will continue to take things that already exists and make them better. That’s why that quote stood out to me so much. Because yes, people live by laws, but copyright should not be one of those. The ability to express yourself creatively under the influence of someone else shouldn’t be a law people have to live by. Despite all of this however, I still think copyright laws do have a place in society. The sad reality is that there are many people who commit acts of plagiarism. People who see ideas from others, will steal them and profit.
While I do feel like copyright laws do have a good purpose to serve, there is definitely a point to where it can go overboard and be taken out of proportion. Like the story of the planes that Lessig spoke about.
COPYRIGHT LAWS W/ LARRY LESSIG
After watching the video on copyright laws with Larry Lessig, my biggest takeaway was the highlighting of common sense, and how it does not allow for true free creation. Mr. Lessig is right in pointing out that when you factor in the dawn of man from the time we were closer to apes than anything else, there is no true original content at this point. Everything at this point is essentially a “copy” of a copy.
How much should users of the web think about copyright as you and others share, re-share, and remix content on the web?
Users of the web is a broad blanket statement. Casual users of the web don’t need to worry about copyright issues. Creators on/of the web however, unfortunately have to be very mindful of taking this into account. I recently had an experience with that very law when I made a short video of 39th Birthday using an excerpt from the LInkin Park song Little things give you away. Good thing the video was cheesy and/or amateurish and I was only using it to build my video editing skills.
What is fair use?
As long as you/one are not trying to overtly monetize off of the work/content someone else made, you/we should all be able to harness the power of technology to repurpose pieces of all art and culture to tell our story, our perspective.
Larry Lessig said, “It is now anybody with access to a $1500 computer who can take sounds and images from the culture around us and use it to say things differently. These tools of creativity have become tools of speech. It is a literacy for this generation.“
This resonates with me for one reason, and one reason alone. Stand-up comedy. The one art form that breaks all the boundaries and pushes the limit of human potential anytime someone has the presence of mind and/or balls to do so. Stand-up comedians are the unofficial frontline defenders of all things free speech and true creative expression. Don’t believe me. Take a listen to this bit by the great George Carlin and tell me he wouldn’t be bombarded by todays’ cancel culture.
What are Copyrights? How are they used
Copyright is a legal right that allows a producer of original material to retain ownership over their work and prevent it from being stolen and used.
Copyrights exist to help protect the rights of those who create works on the internet. This is particularly true when the market or economic considerations are involved.
All should be aware of copyright laws as long as they are followed legally and are not used for commercial purposes. Everyone on social media likes to share their creativity and share it with others, but people should be mindful of copyright laws because they can be very harsh when dealing with it legally.
Fair use permits the use of a small portion of a work without the permission of the creator, and it is protected by law. Video music parody, news reporting analysis, and other forms of fair use are examples.
EXAMPLES OF FAIR USE
When it comes to expressing imagination, Larry Lessig speaks a lot about how the government has a lot of influence over us. According to him, imagination is absorbed by someone other than the creator. “Competition could achieve some kind of balance,” said one quote that stood out to me.
This struck me as being representative of our modern culture, in which an artist or designer can choose to make their own work freely accessible to others. It should be more of a level playing field. To have a variety of options for the children on the iterate so that they do not engage in harmful behavior.
What’s the Steez?
STEEZURKEL.COM
My idea for my website is simply something I’ve always wanted. A site about me! The site name is one of my many monikers (I had a pretty good idea that it wouldn’t be taken) that I use when I stream or play games online. I want to use my website as a way to advertise the content that I already have on the internet and provide new content and updates on my life as well. Essentially a blog but with video games, mini-podcasts and whatever else I can think of.
The name is centered around Jaleel White and his iconic character Steve Urkel who happens to be my celebrity look-alike. I’ve gotten it for years and expect to until I’ve retired from this planet (If I’m lucky). Although I never saw this comparison as a bad thing, I think it’s funny to embrace it, especially as the show fades from mainstream popularity. I will keep the energy of Steve (and Stephan) alive through my funny one-liners and nerdy interests.
Although unlike Steve (and more like Stephan), I bring some flavor (swag, sauce or STEEZ if you will) to the table. Although I owe a lot of it to my New York upbringing, I have been many places and seen many things. I want to share my thought processes about popular topics along with showing off my skills in whatever medium I choose. I want my work to shock the masses and maybe even myself. I want to read or watch it back and think, “Wow. Did I do that?”
The Mid-Semester Assessment
CT-101 CT-10FUN
CT101 is one of the most unique classes I have ever taken. It has taught me so many things that I have longed to learn about in such a short period of time. I have gone from a blog writing novice to a…well…I’m still that. My growth, however, is rapid and my goals are high so I am confident in my future. I may not be at A level yet, but I will try my best to rise to the cream of the crop!
This class has taught me to be less intimidated by the internet’s vast amount of websites and tools that foster our creativity. I was too afraid to tackle the creation of GIFs on my own because I thought they were way more complex than they are. Now that this class has pushed me to create a few, I have confidence that I could RUN the GIF game just like Professor Seslow. (Coming for you Professor)
As you can tell from this post, my GIF choices have also improved when it comes to memes. I have put a lot more effort into using more flamboyant language to spice it up a little bit. I want everyone to crack at least one smile while reading my ridiculous wording of my post.
I hold myself to a high level when it comes to creating anything so although I think I am doing well, I also know I can improve my work and push my posts to the next level. This class has taught me to have more fun with my classes. I have always taken classes so seriously, but classes like this help develop self expression through writing. A little bit of levity can turn the most boring project into a fun activity if you have the right mindset.
I am always pushing myself to try something different so I can keep the eyes on my work and shine through all of my posts. I believe that many of my classmates are talented in that aspect and that challenges the competitive part in me. By the end of this class, I want my body of work to speak for itself.
Here is my BODY of work so far. Enjoy 😀
Why cities are more creative than villages……..
In his fascinating book Where Good Ideas Come from: The Natural History of Innovation, Steven Johnson discusses how cities are more creative than villages……
But why ?
We usually think of “creative persons” rather than “creative places”…..
However , it turns out that…Creativity isn’t only in ….
But also…….
Our creativity is dependent on our environment and other peoples ideas…
New Ideas= mixture of other ideas.
Like living in a city ,when we are surrounded by more different ideas and many different people…. There is a higher chance that we will find new combination.
More ideas begets more ideas.
( Villages )
Less ideas * Less ideas = Less ideas
(Cities )
more ideas * more ideas = more ideas
copy right= the killer of creativity
As mentioned above, new ideas are a mixture of other ideas.
More ideas will mean more new ideas ..
We can’t innovate and create in a vacuum , all innovation and creativity builds on each other…..
This is where copy right laws can hinder the creative process ..
Narratives with Social Media Posts
For this CT 101 assignment, since I’m pretty new to twitter and IG, I decided to try embedding a twitter post from the popular Verzuz site onto my blog.

Copyright or Wrong?
My Take On Copyrighting
After watching the ted talk with Larry Lessig, and after much consideration I find that the copyright rule is much needed for the internet. Especially this day in age, where we have so many people who can get so comfortable in ripping off other people’s ideas and creations. There is no fair justice in lying and taking credit for something that was not yours to begin with.
As technology has become so diverse and advanced over the years, we as human can’t help but to evolve right along with it. And that’s what’s supposed to happen, but can our so called culture be tainted by the minds and plans of those who want to much power? People who are so driven by pride that they can drag a whole generation into a pit of darkness? It sounds morbid, but yes, it’s true.
Larry Lessig made some very compelling points in this ted talk, words and ideas that need to be told to the public about the world’s past history with developing technology. At the beginning of the ted talk video, Lessig mentions a man by the name of John Philip Sousa who was nonetheless, a man of true essence and culture. And rightfully so, but I did disagree with his thoughts on technology not developing. He implied that these “infernal machines” would do us no good.
In a way, he was wrong, but he was also right; Lessig goes on to say that the culture went on from a “read-write” to “read-only” existence. To me that meant that half of the time we only read something just to read it, but when is the last time somebody took account for what they have read? Or done research, and developed more on what they’ve learned? And it’s at that point that the copyrighting rule, though not always fair, it’s a rule that’s needed, especially for this generation. Especially when people don’t take the time to really dive into what they’re reading or learning. To understand and take account for what you learn is the greatest venture of them all. Truly looking past the words that lie in front of you, is the most important thing.
Reaction to classmates websites
I took a look at angels website I really like his name ange the strange its really creative and just different his main post is really a story about him and defines him i could definitely tell because I have a second class with him and really shows his viewpoint on things and has a great personality. http://angeldejesus.com/ An other website I checked out was Cassie Khan’s https://thereslifeoutside.com/ it was very interesting I liked the background image at first I thought it was trying to tell me to go outside but then I realized that the site was about astronomy I’m hoping to see what’s added to the site
MY NEW NEW WEBSITE!!!
Hey everyone, my name is Garrick. For my website I initially didn’t know what to do with it, and still in a lot of ways don’t, which is one of the reasons I had put it off for a while. To try and find a plan or map out what theme my website was going to be about. However, I eventually just came around to it and made my website off of purely going with the flow. Which benefited me more then waiting to come up with ideas. And I will continue to decide what direction to go in and make improvements. But without any further ado here’s my website.

HEY FOODIES , IT’S YOUR GIRL BREE. THIS SITE WILL BE YOUR GUIDE TO TRANSITION INTO VEGANSIM, VEGAN RECIPES , & INFORMATION ON VEGAN ALTERNATIVES. FOR MY FIRST POST I THOUGHT I’D GIVE YOU GUYS A LITTLE INTRO INTO WHAT MADE ME TRANSITION INTO VEGANSIM. I FOUND OUT ABOUT VEGANSIM BACK IN 2017 WHEN I FIRST FOUND OUT ABOUT DR. SEBI . DR SEBI IS A HERBALIST THAT HAS CURED HUNDREDS OF PATIENTS USING HERBS AND BY GUIDING THEM TO CHANGE THEIR DIETS TO A VEGAN DIET. WHAT REALLY INTRIGUED ME THE MOST ABOUT HIS DIET IS THAT HE HELPED CURED PEOPLE THAT HAD INCURABLE DISEASES USING HIS DIET. I WAS EXTREMELY IMPRESSED HE WAS ALSO ONE OF THE VERY FEW PEOPLE IN THE WORLD TO EVER WIN A CASE AGAINST THE SUPREME COURT.EVEN THOUGH I FOUND OUT ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IN 2017 I WOULD SAY THAT PERSONALLY I DIDN’T CARE TO START TAKING THIS INFORMATION SERIOUSLY UNTIL 2020. COVID HIT AND I STARTED REALIZING HOW MUCH PEOPLE WERE DYING BY HAVING A WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM AND THE CAUSE OF DISEASES WERE WHAT WE WERE EATING. I ALSO STARTED WORKING AT A HEALTH FOOD STORE IN 2020 AND THAT HELPED ME ON MY JOURNEY A LOT BECAUSE IT MADE ME REALIZE THE POWER OF HERBS AND A VEGAN DIET. IT FELT GOOD KNOWING THAT I HELPED PEOPLE GET RID OF COVID, HEALTH PROBLEMS , & MORE. WHAT MADE ME GET INTO COOKING NOW IS ALSO THE FACT THAT MY CUSTOMERS WOULD ENJOY MY FOOD AND COULDN’T BELIEVE THAT IT WAS VEGAN AND THAT’S WHAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD THE MOST. SHOWING PEOPLE THAT I CAN NOT ONLY MAKE SURE THEY’RE EATING HEALTHY AND ALSO MAKING SURE THAT IT TASTES GOOD TRULY MAKES ME HAPPY AND THAT’S WHERE MY JOURNEY STARTED. FAST FORWARD HERE WE ARE NOW WHERE I SERVE AND CATER VEGAN FOOD , GIVE VEGAN RECIPES , AND HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH AND I TRULY CANNOT WAIT TO SHARE THIS JOURNEY WITH YOU GUYS
