“The Internet’s Own Boy” A Story about Aaron Swartz

The concept of revolutionary campaign against some social, controversial standards is usually undertaken by men with strong vision, passion and unrelenting personality. In the case of Aaron Swarts, he believed he could change the world and indeed, he made a strong impact.

Aaron found it difficult to accept that the public should have to pay to access public information, journals and other public forms of knowledge. His available tool was internet, but above all, his motives are inspiring. Through out the documentary, Aaron could be seen as a missionary for public access to information. Not withstanding how he embarks on this revolution, one thing stands out most for me – his motives. It was not to enrich himself but to make as much information as possible available to the public at no cost.

As controversial as his approach looks, Aaron’s contribution to creative commons, his involvement in the scrap of the SOPA bill speaks to his legacy. According to Aaron, “On the internet, everyone can have a channel, everyone can have a blog, or myspace page, everyone has a way of expressing themselves. And so what you see now is not a question of who gets access to the air waves, it is a question of who get control of the ways you find people.” This is a strong reflection of his passion.

Eventually, towards the end of the documentary the shows how Aaron’s work stands justified – ‘Jack Andraka’s breakthrough pancreatic cancer test would never have come about were it not for access to online journals…’ This documentary sends a strong, long-lasting message!

Picking a Domain Name

According to fastcomet, ‘Domain names serve as a memorable representation of the content that we can find on a certain website.’ I believe that this definition simply captures to full meaning of domain names.

While choosing a domain name, these factors should be taken very seriously: How catch and easy to remember it sounds and how it reflects the contents of the website/company. These points simply define the true essence of a domain name.

Let’s look a practical examples. If a company that sells catfish in New York wants to build a website, imagine they choose a name like catfishnewyork.com vs whereyoucanbuyacatfishny.com. The first is short, catch and easy to remember while the second is too long to remember and out of place. This is how important a domain name can be.

Another important factor is that google crawls name based on keywords. It will be easier for catfishnewyork.com to pop up on google search.

For my project, I will be developing a Social Media Marketing Website. Therefore, I would be thinking of names that can easily pop up on google search, names that are memorable and names that reflect my web content.

Theses are my choices: Mediaads,  Socialmediahub, Mediacart and DigiHub.

Mediahub: This name is self explanatory and very short and easy to remember. Above all, it is in line with the subject of my website which is digital marketing.

Socialmediahub: Again, this is also a reflection of what my website is all about. More importantly, it is a catch term that can easily pop up on google and therefore it gives my website a good chance in google organic recognition.

Mediacart: The word cart is also one of most crawled words in google. It will help my website’s recognition, it’s easy to remember and fits very well in my subject.

Digihub: This is created from an abbreviation of digitalhub. I didn’t want  the name to be too long, instead I shortened it. However, it is short. It is my least in preference.

I will pick any of these, based on their availability.

DS106 Assignment – Part 2

This is my second project from the DS106 Assignment Bank. It has to do with branding. It is actually creating a logo for an unregistered company.

I chose this project because I am very interested in branding. I believe this is where graphic artists demonstrate a great sense of creativity. To fully achieve an effective logo, a good branding logo must have the following: Strong color choice, Memorable and Clear. I obviously took all these into consideration before creating this logo.

This is what the logo from DS106 assignment bank looks:

Below is what mine looks like:

This is how I created the logo: First, I chose the company to create the logo for. I decided to use color yellow because of its high sense of emphasis and attention. The I went to google to get a transparent delivery icon which can be memorable. To be able to see the effects of yellow, I knew I had to use a black background. The words ‘Fast, Safe & Reliable’ are used to express the professionalism of the company. The program I used for this is Microsoft Publisher.

I enjoyed the experience.

Domain Name Process

So I have finally created my domain name!

The winner is slimshakey.com

I have decided that since I already have this username for my youtube channel why not make this into a full brand.

I plan on putting content of videos and skits etc showcasing my passion for acting. The process itself was very smooth and I am very excited to finally say I have my own website!

Besides my youtube content, i want to make it scary themed talking about paranormal stuff, conspiracy theories and stuff that people are afraid to discuss. I find the paranormal itself very fascinating because people get a huge adrenaline rush and so I want to create horror themed content!

My domain name is the act of birth of a website for the bottom leaders.

www.guadelead.com

When I created my first address e-mail in 2000 I randomly jointed the prefix of my both first name and last name together plus the number 2000 to get guadel2000. My classmates at that time caught “Guadel” and made it a nickname to refer to myself. Unfortunately, I have never thought about spreading it out of school, such as at work. However, until now, my former classmates and other people keep calling me like that. Not only could it be a nice domain name, but aldo it would easily attract those who know me. After all, such a name is remembered and spelled without difficulty. I then wondered why not www.guadel.com ?

What my new website would be about? I took a time before answering. I even smiled. Why? As a journalist I used work on various topics, including Politics, Sports, Culture and Tourism. In addition, I love Art, History and Literature (Poetry, particularly). But, the assignment recalled me a new concern about a topic on which I put a certain time reading. This topic is leadership. Indeed, I noticed that everything we know about leadership is from the top. Most books on leadership are written by Chefs Executive Officer (CEO) or/and theoreticians of Leadership. It sounds like just CEO can be leaders while rare are those who really climb the ladder through which they could truly have seen their leadership being challenged. Let’s take the case of those young people with a master, or even a bachelor that companies hire in a high position at the expense of workers with long time experience and great skills.

My point is that there should be plenty of leaders across a company, but they are not emerged for one reason or another. Some leader, for instance, have lone weakness which is making sure of removing bars from the ladder (organigram) after being climbed it or even parachuting into an upper position. By doing that they condemned other leaders to remain in the bottom. I think that the latter needs to be heard. My website would be a platform for them to make their case on leadership. They would express their experience as a leader at the bottom of the ladder wile positioning themselves on the leadership above them and Leadership globally. Such reports could inspire other workers positively and lead the senior officials to a self-awareness in relation to their conception of leadership. That does not necessarily refer to top-down leadership. I just figure that sometimes the true leaders perform from and remain in the bottom. Perhaps www.guadelead.com would sound better as a domain name.

However, I think such a website can go further and be much more useful to the societies. More widely, it can be a platform for publishing works from a sort of exercise of identifying leadership action from people having been in position of leader. Today’s leaders or growing leaders from various fields, including politic, business, education and sports would converge towards it for inspiring, comparing, judging and even learning from actual and ancient known and unknown leaders. For instance, it would make sense that www.guadelead.com allows leaders to figure at what degree voters or people they works for or through value their accomplishment.

Finally, as I am passionnate about History, I would take the opportunity to report on my readings on Georges Washington, Winston Churchill, Charles De Gaulle, Toussaint Louverture, Julius Cesar, and others political leaders.

Throughout generations Art has evolve and  has been presented and expressed in different forms. Internet Boy

In the documentary, Swartz differs from fellow programmers because he didn’t allow money to influence his way of life or work ethics. After Swartz moved to San Francisco and start working at Condenast, his life took a turn. First, he was given a computer that had programs installed by Condenast. However, Swartz wasn’t allowed to add anything else limiting himself. As mention, in the documentary, “which to developers is outrageous.”  He had different ideas compared to others, he was politically oriented. It was said that Swartz hated the corporate life and majority of his colleague had the same perspective. However, Swartz was the one to take a stand against this corporation by intentionally getting himself fired. He was leaving the things that made him famous and well-loved. He was at risk of letting down fans.

Swartz states, “you should always be questionable” and not confined to standards of society. In a sense that is how he lived his life by taking a scientific approach to life, which contributed to his success as a programmer. As an activist, Swartz realized that there are real problems in the world and if he could do something to help fix that, he was going to help at any way he can. He focused his attention and work on making public information more available to the public.  As a result, for every book ever published he wanted to have a web page that made it easier for the public to find information. Swartz believed that “books are our cultural legacy. Hence, this aspect of  his life was significant the development of how information is shared today.

Potential domain names

List of websites I would be interested in creating are the following,

simplypsycho.com – based on popular conspiracy theory.

meanonymous.com- based on mental health and current events.

vaporcity.com- reviewing/creating spooky, chilling content.

The reason I chose to do these topic is because it’s different from the website that are broadcasted in the mainstream media and it will be a good experiment if the website picks up traction. Overall, I am excited to be a website owner because I have always had a passion for writing and now I can share my thoughts and ideas to others rather than only my family and friends.

The Internet’s Own Boy

First I want to say that I have already heard about Aaron Swartz and his legacy.

I have always been very curious with topics related to hackers, hacktivists and people related to information technology and a couple of years ago I was doing research on white, gray and black hat hackers, and I came across an article about Aaron Swartz. From my point of view, I knew him more as a hacktivist person who wanted to make the internet a better place with free information about what you want.

The idea that I consider important that Aaron mention is to have free information on the internet (I don’t remember if he said it in the video of “The Internet’s Own Boy” or in an interview since I saw many interviews of him) and it seems very silly that all that information is available only to a certain group of people like us just for being students. I think that if it is learning information, it should be free worldwide.

We as students have access to the college library where we can find millions of verified articles and it is because CUNY has an agreement with copyright owners such as The New York Times. But people who are not students cannot have this information for free.

I was also very interested in Aaron’s law which is about how “digital crime” should be judged since the sentence they gave Aaron was too exaggerated, and this law helps people related to “digital crimes” have a better sentence depending on what they have done.

The downside is that someone always has to die to make a change and leave a legacy in the world as Aaron did it.

Guys I’m so stuck!

I’m the most indecisive person I know, so I can’t decide what my domain name will be. And I know this should be the simplest activity but I honestly only have two working brain cells and their both doing the dougie……

So Yea

Now I do have some ideas..Actuallyyyy..like three…but that’s not the point.

So first I thought of what my blog would be about, I thought about things I enjoy and it came to me that my blog would be my reactions to different shows, gossip, music videos, music, and life in general. I wanna catch others attention and keep it so why not give everyone pure, unapologetic entertainment.

Back to this name business.

So my two ideas are:

LetsGetToTalking

LetsGetToTalkingWithNya

Or

NyaSaidWHAT?

Man I don’t know, Y’ll choose.

Picking Domain Name

Hi everyone…

the hangover GIF

Mmm for a domain name…

What would be the name of my website? Mmmm I would say…

The truth is I don’t know, I only have a couple names in my head but I’m not sure which one to use yet.

  • The first would be my name and my surname “Bryancardenas.com/net”
  • The second option can be “Bryalcg.com/net”
  • And the last option could be “Bryalcardenas.com/net”

The first option is very clear to understand, it is my first name and my first surname; the second option has the first syllable of my first name Bryan, the first syllable of my middle name Alfonso and the first letters of my first and second last name Cardenas Garcia. If we put them together, we get Bryalcg. And my last option is like the previous option, a combination of the initials of my two names Bryan + Alfonso = Bryal + my last name = Bryalcardenas. Also, this name Bryal I always use as a username on different platforms such as study programs, or social networks or even video games.

Now, I don’t know what I would talk about on my page. Previously I had a blog in which I published poetry written by me, but this site was anonymous. But now I want to be something different. I would like to criticize songs and movies, but I would like to do it in Spanish. I feel more comfortable writing in this language.

Assignment #5: Part 1: Choosing My Domain Name

I have a few names in mind.

#WheelChairBae. I use this for my self here on this forum as a disabled person who is nothing like what people assume I am. I do use a Wheelchair but I love to take shots with my friends, I love getting tattoos and racing my boyfriend who can walk. Bae is slang for a baby as in what you call someone you love. Life has taught me many thing about who I am People who love me love me in spite of my differences. The funniest thing about me is I do enjoy running over peoples feet when they stare at me.  When I was in high school the Kermit meme is what the teacher would take my attendance. I was happy when drake came out with that song my friends and I could lay Chamilionaire lyrics to rest.

#DissemationProject

Dissemination-the action or fact of spreading something, especially information, widely.

#IntersectionalRollingRebellion.

There is term a leased in my class called Intersectionality which is thee interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. I think a lot of my problems in society Im a black disabled women which is very much interconnected I face racism and ableism and because I am a woman the wage gap does affect me. I think my website will be an interconnected blog that can benefit many different people even if you’re not disabled information can help someone you might meet who is or a family member.

Creating my Website

Creating my website was quite easier than I expected. As I stated in my ‘domain name’ blog post, I went with the name straighttalkwithkysa.com.

I used the instructions posted under the blog post made by the professor to ensure that I was doing the right thing.

Although I did not need the class lecture to create the website, I did use it for the steps that followed after. When choosing a theme for the website, I went with ‘twenty seventeen’ because it’s the one that appealed to me the most. I’m not sure if I will stick with this theme as the content is posted but I think it will do for now.

I’m looking forward to our upcoming class so that I can continue building the site and posting content soon!
