Immediately when given the option to create something public, especially with having the chance to show off pieces of myself my narcissistic tendencies kicked in.
I created a website to basically be a thumbnail of who I am and what I’m passionate about currently in my life.
Basketball is and has been the biggest passion in my life for a while now which is why it’s a larger part of the site as a whole.
After the woman has successfully unspoken rizzed you into clicking on the link for my website you should have seen how the site just showed a base layer of myself as well as me trying to expand my public presence which is something I usually do with all my public creations to keep a web of myself ultimately.
I think this is a good prototype and a slight taste for my idea for the more formal website we will eventually create where I will try to make it more brand-like to sell myself in that way but I am happy with this first stage.
I had no idea what to do at first. Part of me wanted to make it a collage of things I like (which it still ended up close to). BUT!! I felt like it should have a simple creativity to it. So I started brainstorming.
At first, I thought about the things that are important to me like my family, girlfriend and friends. Since I don’t have a whole bunch of pictures of the significant people in my life (those are pending), I decided to instead use things that make me happy.
I really enjoy memes, my city and gifs so I tried to incorporate those into my page. In the end we had pure unadulterated CHAOS!!!!!
In any case, its an accurate representation of my creative thought process at least. I really enjoy space, music, memes, basketball, SpongeBob, hidden messages….. Basically I enjoy a lot of things and since I didn’t want my main page to be too serious the second page and onward will probably focus on individual interests like, architecture, coding, shows, music, etc.
While my second page is in development, I present to you without further ado…. my main mmm.page.
It’s time to begin thinking about choosing a domain name that can represent your digital self! <– (we will watch this video in class together)
Its time to start planning the website building aspect of this course! Exciting? It is indeed! But first, what is a domain?
You can’t (and shouldn’t) pick just anything..
This part is important!
It has to be unique! And it also has to be available!
It should be relevant – it could be based on your real name,
Or a nickname and or something meaningful to you!
You will need to search for its availability using a domain registrar and you can pick from a number of different ‘top level domains (TLD)’ – for example .com, .net, .us, and .org – then you can have an example like – “mypersonalsite.net”
As we go forward to select and register our domain names (**don’t do this on your own please, I will be walking you through the process in class next week!)
You’re also going to need web hosting, which will allow you to put files up online and will be discoverable through your new domain name! We are going to use a form of ‘shared hosting’ where you get a portion of a server – think of it as having an apartment in a building..
With this shared hosting you will be able to do a lot of things including installing your own instance of WordPress! (via WordPress.org and not wordpress.com – they are a lil’ different) With WordPress installed you can then start building your website for your domain name. I will cover a series of demonstrations on how to do this and I will record all of the demonstrations and tutorials.
We use a company called Reclaim Hosting, with which we have a contract with so you can enter a coupon code and start your account for free.
**The coupon code will be e-emailed to everyone via blackboard starting next week and the week after – so I will be reminding you to check your York college e-mail address to get the code.

**This Week’s Blog Post Assignment:Assignment #7 –
Write a new blog post that shares a few of the potential domain names that you would consider using for your website. List them (at least 5-10 potential names) and say a few words about why they would be good examples for the website that you will build.
Let’s also speculate:
What might your new website be about? This part is totally up to you! If you wish, you can use the website project itself for a specific niche project, for example, perhaps you want to share your passion for cooking and poetry. Which means you will be primarily writing blog posts about cooking and poetry while building the website simultaneously. This can also be applied to sports, or gaming, or politics or journalism, or simply put, website that fused together many interests as well as your ct101 assignments.
Share your thoughts, excitements, fears and any other sentiments about how you are feeling about this next chapter in your life as a website owner!
Please apply all of the existing blogging skills that you have developed and include a few images, GIFs, memes and hyperlinks. Also – lets add a few screen shots of some of your favorite existing websites, let us know why you like them!
You know sometimes it’s good to look back and reflect on your old work. Just like what I’m doing today. CT101 so far is a really fun class, learning how to write a blog and it is such a fun experience. I am doing pretty well learning and improving what I am lacking on this website.
Personally I felt like I’d learn how to make a blog.. duhhhh. Writing a blog is actually relaxing since at first I was stiff and uncomfortable with how to express myself in blogging but after this class, I feel more open. Also, I learned how to use memes more effectively, yeah I could use them for humor but with CT101 I can effectively use better memes to tell a story and it became a form of art for me.
Looking back at my old work, I barely wrote when I did it wasn’t like me. it felt stiff and short. Now, it’s more in-depth and personal and more fun to look back at. With this self-reflection, I personally feel like my performance is better now compare to before taking this class. I do think that when I write for other classes I am more open to myself rather than giving bland answers just to answer. Now I talk more and am more personal.
Also, surprisingly enough I got smarter when it comes to using memes.
Yeah man, now I use my brain to use memes that my friends laugh at more since they understood the references. I feel like I got a big brain.
Even though I post a lot, I do not comment on a lot of my other classmates’ posts. I want to improve on that since I do read everyone’s post but I just forget to comment on it and all of you guys rock.
Overall, I do believe I would have an A or a B+ in this class because I’m having so much fun in this class, and reading everyone’s work is so fun too. I think I do great in this class with my work I give it 100 percent but just need to work on commenting on my classmates’ work.
Well, I think I spoke enough for today’s post here’s a random fun fact; avocados are deadly to birds. So if you know someone that owns a bird, tell them. Until next time!!!
I think a core inspiration or more like an overpowering influence when creating this site was modern websites. I think the internet in general has become a clean, utilitarian, corporate space.
A lot of sites are about professionalism and a minimalistic futuristic design at the cost of personality.
In the 1990s and 2000s when the internet was rising in popularity a lot of sites were not like that. They were fun, expressive, and had goofy, hyper-stimulating backgrounds.
Even social media sites like myspace and even youtube had customizable backgrounds and themes for your page.
In retrospect sometimes these designs can come off as hyperstimulating and cringy but despite that, all of them now seem simultaneously nostalgic and even refreshing compared to the white or black modern minimalist space.
And so when designing my own personal site it was difficult to put together a site with so much personality when you so well adapted to making monotonous, utilitarian websites that serve a purpose rather than convey a personality.
A lot of this mixed in with my own dry and cynical persona to make a site trying to have personality but ultimately failing. I only thought about making a portfolio site, a liminal site serving as a gateway to my artwork and social media sites while also adding a puzzle-like aspect to my work.
I made three pages within my site. The first was the main page, the second was a slightly cryptic about me section and the third was a synopsis of a character I made.
There are also links to a song, my webcomics, my social media platforms, and my portfolio. Overall I think I did a pretty decent job but hopefully, I can squeeze out more creativity from my neurons and add more things to the website.
I challenge everyone to explore the site and find as much as you can.
I’ve decided to make a website dedicated to my vision in life. I’ve curated a vision board in scrapbook style. I chose this because i like to stay motivated and on my path. I like to remind myself of what I’m doing and who I do it for.
looking into the future
In my first mmm.page my vision board basically says id like to be a nurse practitioner. I will graduate with my Bachelors this December in health sciences and with my BSN in 2024. I’d like to own a house in long island and own a BMW x6 competition car. I’d like to have 2 kids and be married. id like to stay kind and true to myself and my roots. I’d like to be happy and mentally stable. To achieve all of this id have to work hard ofcourse. the rest you can read and use your imagination 🙂
Using mmm.page was actually really fun. it gave me the option to use gifs, shapes, links just like this blog page. I like how this class uses me to use my creativity. I was compelled to create something personal to share a little more about myself.
For me, being alive means that working hard and earning money so that you can save and spend it on things that will help you and your family on the long run. Another reason of being alive is my love for the movies and cinematography by going to the movie theaters. No, I have not ever defined it beyond someone else’s interpretation.
The creative potential of this assignment is to explore deep in our minds so that we can expand our imagination a little bit more and have more imaginative options on what we want to create.
I would like to express that I am very curious and excited to work on this interesting website that I never heard of. As for the awareness, I will post my experience in a blog post (which is this blog post) and on my social media.
What I am passionate about is watching movies of my favorite type of genres which are horror, dystopian/futuristic type of movies like Inception, Tenet, and Interstellar.
I always wanted to express and share with the world that my love for the movies and cinematography is what brought me to the art side and being interested in creating anything digital.
I feel like what holds me back is that I don’t know how exactly to express that and before taking this class or this assignment, I didn’t know there was a website and an open space platform like mmm.page to express myself.
My experience with the mmm.page was really fun to explore and play around with. I am compelled to create something related to horror topics and movies.
What I created on my mmm.page was a depiction of a horror and an illusion/dreamlike type of movie with clues or tips of a fake reality which can be really scary and that death is the only way out of the hologram.
Walking into this semester, I had no idea what to expect. I changed my major about 4 times prior to communications technology and honestly, I was losing hope. As soon as I walked into my classes, specifically this one, I knew I was in the right place. I enjoy going to every class and doing every assignment in this class which is something I never thought I would say! I am able to dig deeper into my creativity and yet do what is expected. I really enjoy learning and having fun with it. Being able to digital story tell has completely changed the game. I learned so much so far and its only mid way into the semester. What I have retained the most from this class is the importance of art and how it differs from person to person, yet it still unites us all . For example, using memes. This class has differently opened my eyes on how its such a universal language. Art communicates emotions, societal issues, really anything in a fun way. From taking this class, I improved my ability in storytelling. Growing up, I absolutely HATEDDD any kind of English class. I was never good at writing. But in this class, I definitely enjoyed writing and storytelling. I am able to express weekly assignments in a unique way. Honestly, I never took into consideration how impactful a meme is. This class has opened my eyes on how important and revolutionary it is. Actually, just recently I just got a new job and for the training videos that every employee has to complete, the company added memes in every module and in every single page. Just seeing that not only made the training videos automatically enjoyable, but it made me forget about the anxieties I had walking in. Comparing this to my other job, when I first started and was completing the training videos, it had no memes. Just text. It gave such a different energy whereas as soon as I was completing the tutorials with the memes, it altered the way I felt. Memes affect mood, its strange yet super cool way of communicating and brings a universal unity. In regards to grades, I think I am maintaining an A- at least. I say this because I tend to forget to comment on other peoples posts which I am definitely going to complete as soon as I finish catching up on some assignments. Other than that, I genuinely do put so much effort in my post because its something I genuinely enjoy completing. From where I first started. I see a lot of improvement especially in the storytelling aspect. As mentioned before, I hated anything that had to do with literature. I think I have gotten the hang off storytelling, even using a digital medium like giphy and my own work to execute what is expected. Truthfully, I have not been responding or commenting on posts since the beginning of the semester. But starting from now, I definitely am going too, especially because I want a really good grade in this class since I’m super proud of the work I’ve put out. Completing this reflection has definitely made me sit down and actually realize and reflect my progress so far in the semester. when we were first assigned this assignment, I didn’t really know what I could write about but now its clear that I actually have retained so much. I’m excited to finish this semester !
Ehh I tried….. Anyways the page itself is pretty awesome I do say so myself. What compelled me to do this was simple, I like space and syfi where a person enters another world. As you can see on the website, an astronaut entering to a winter world from a portal.
pretty cool right? Yeahhhhh it’s a thing I do with my art, I just make mini stories in my work. Oh not to mention what inspired me is one of my favorite movies; Interstellar.
If you guys haven’t watched I recommend it if you like space movies. If not I respect it. Hopefully, throughout this week I want to continue editing my site and continue the story I have with my astronaut buddy because it is a fun simple site to use.
From my own experience with this website, I think it is a pretty cool and simple website to move around. However, I had some grips with it, it is very limiting for me, I may be wrong but I couldn’t really show how I wanted to present the layout I thought of but made it work with this.
Well, I had fun talking to you guys see ya in the next post!!
We are looking at everything creative. Yes, creativity.
As a class, we looked at so much, from creativity to intuition and immediacy. It boiled to creative potential. For example, the assignment I will write about below had so much potential. If you look at it, it’s crazy how a small device you mostly use on a table or in your lap, can do so much. In this case, we worked on a website by adding various elements. Just think about life now vs life 20 years ago. Crazy how more creative you can be as time goes on. There’s always something unique that can be done.
At this point, while I’m not completely sure what I’m passionate about, using these handheld devices just to make something is just
Now let’s dive into what I worked on
Using this site mmm.page , I built something about Jamaica. Now while I’m not a UX/UI designer, I was able to throw some stuff on the screen and in my mind they made sense. First, here’s a little info on the website.
Now, I worked on a Jamaican site. Here’s the first page
This was just a mash-up of some things/people unique to Jamaica. Why did I create it? At the time of brainstorming, I was listening to a Jamaican song that got me really hyped. It’s PG80. Listen at your own risk.
But it reminded me of Jamaica, so I got to work. In the picture, you’ll see icons like Usain Bolt (fastest man on the planet), Shelly-Ann Frazer Pryce (one of the three fastest women alive), a girl dancing to Dancehall, and our National Tree. These are just mere snippets of Jamaica. Most importantly, the flag of Jamaica. The colors are black, green and gold!
It started off with a video explaining Jamaican symbols. There is a very famous poem there as well, written by a very famous Jamaican, Louise Bennett Coverly
There are also some other elements, like a Bob Marley and Spice gif.
To be honest, I didn’t really like the site’s functionality. I guess because I’m used to other builders like WordPress and Wix. I also didn’t like the fact that I could only upload 10 pieces of media. Overall, it wasn’t bad to work with. It was simple and easy to add stuff and write text.
So…….. Remember to embrace your creativity. What will you create next?
Isn’t that so koooool? This feeling that I am receiving from this song is sooooo different than the feeling that I initially received from my very first assignment. As a senior I am doing quite well, not to mention proud of myself for accomplishing this very first assignment. At the beginning “Bang, zoom Alice. To the Moon!”
I know that even though I haven’t reached my highest potential in this class, I am now certain of my potential being sky high. This class has opened up the flood gates of vast up to date skills that I wasn’t even aware of. The grasshopper is becoming a master.
Lol. Not quite but I’m getting there. After all, does not practice make perfect?
GIF’s, IMUGUR, and other platforms were introduced to me in my second assignment. I was totally oblivious of all the instruments, platforms, and advantages that the internet and web-browsers can afford to anyone that is willing to learn and embrace the new world. Trust me when I tell you, this century is a new world. “The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round!” Thus far, I have really enjoyed learning new skills that use internet tools.
It took a minute; however, Gifs, memes, hyperlinks, and screenshots I believe I have mastered. But this has only brought me up to Assignment #3.
It is true that class CT101 has definitely made me come out of hiding. What a beautiful morning, what a beautiful day, anytime accurate knowledge has shown me a brighter way.
I see my work expanding with each assignment. I have given more thought, patience, and time to assignments that are given. My assignments have become more in depth and lengthy, showing that I have come to actually enjoy what I am doing. It is no longer just an assignment.
For the most part, I am becoming more and more comfortable with Digital Storytelling as the days go by. Having weekly assignments has strengthened me not only in the field, but also as a whole. Meaning; it’s just another verification that if you put your mind to something, the sky will always be the limit for not only myself, but for us all. Yahoo!!!
As I embarked on the 5th Assignment, I literally thought that I was going to pass out. Here went the class on a voyage that not only overwhelmed me, but also overwhelmed some of my fellow scholars as well. It may be selfish to admit, but at least I didn’t feel alone. I found that others were struggling too. The bright side of the coin is the love, patience, guidance, and respect that is administered to us scholars by Professor Seslow. Because of his beauty, we have all climbed yet another step and crossed another hurdle of many more to come! What a great teacher that we have in Seslow!!!!
As time goes on, I literally have seen the progress that I have made. The knowledge that I have obtained has also helped me in other classes. One big asset is that I now know how to hyperlink. Mostly; because of this class, I’ve been taught how to express myself in a visual art other than writing, dance, painting, acting, etc. I am able to actually create something that is all my own, share it with others, or get paid for my talent, all while being in the comfort of my home. Man oh man, what a beautiful asset indeed!!!!!
This means doing weekly assignments. Attending class regularly and participating, which are a couple of my strong suits. I’m working on commenting to all of my fellow scholars. After all, we all need feedback to stimulate our well being. I am on campus to interact, network, and embrace the overall experience of human contact. Aren’t we all? Is this not a healthy way of life? Are we not graded in the category of “working well with others”at a very young age during our educational and scholastic journey?
I will continue to make needed improvements by the comments given by my fellow scholars, and by my instructor. It takes a village, and a beautiful village is an accurate description of what CT101 has been for me.
The most creative potential that I have discovered from this class, and this assignment is that of pure creative freedom. I can do screenshots, memes, ghifs, and hyperlinks. So many things that have been taught to me by such an amazing instructor.
Even though my teacher is a male, this is just an example of the way he has broken down walls for me with computer technology! The above illustration is just an example of the creative potential and the use of my web browser has afforded me. Hallelujah!!!
I have many passions, and one is to seek the truth. This is the reason that I’ve chosen journalism. Although at times it can be very aloof.
I want to give the world all accurate newsworthy events. I would love to perhaps write a book and express the deep love that I have for the earth and all of its wonders.
The creative potential that I have with using a rectangle device helps me to climb higher one step at a time, and in time without a crutch.
This how I feel now that I’m on the other side of the window.
I do not feel shut in nor exasperated, just free like a bird with no innuendo!
Wow, here we are at the midpoint of our CT-101 semester! Time… goes by waaaaaay too fast.. Let’s take a minute to reflect, let’s take a minute to regroup, let’s induce a class reflection!
Let us ask ourselves the following questions, and reflect:
“How am I doing in CT101? What have I learned? What new skills have I developed, cultivated and displayed regularly? How does this contribute to my weekly progress? How do I assess my performance through a self-reflection in this class?”
The assessment part is very tangible and clear as we have been producing results over the last 7 weeks in the form of blogging, commenting, creating visual imagery, discussion via various forms and class participation.
Let’s take stock, follow me below,
The CT 101 Course Schedule page is where everything is – this is the CT 101 HUB – this is the space where all the assignments and learning details take form each week – (just in case you forgot) – this is where you can recap and catch up on all assignments – https://ct101.commons.gc.cuny.edu/course-schedule/
In fact, before we move into the next phase of our course, I want to take a week and reflect upon what has already been accomplished, as well as take accountability for what might be missing and in need of improvement.
Let’s title this next post:
Assignment #6 – The Mid-Semester Assessment Post
Assignment Details:
In a new blog post titled:
“Assignment #6 – The Mid-Semester Assessment Post”, please assess and reflect upon your last 7 weeks here in CT 101. Please answer and address the following questions below, and also provide hyperlinks back to all of your previous completed blog posts. This will help illustrate some of the questions below as you tell a compelling story here in the CT 101 blog space: (of course, the use of imagery is helpful and needed but please don’t default to using too many GIFs or memes to fill in the gaps, the emphasis should be on the written word.)
How am I doing in CT101?
What have I learned and retained the most?
What new skills have I developed , cultivated and displayed regularly in my weekly posts?
How do I assess my performance through self-reflection in this class?
What do I know now that I did not know before taking this class?
What grade do I believe I am maintaining?
Do I see my weekly blogging work expanding creatively? If so, please explain – or am I stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time, how will I change that?
Are there any assignments that you are missing? If so, list them. Are you commenting regularly on your classmates posts? Are you responding back to comments given to you by the professor & your classmates? Are you participating during the class time? If not, explain why. This is the time to be accountable. How will you make needed improvements?
Have fun with this!
Feel free to include useful relatedness in the form of links, images, video or Make Something New to express how you feel about this post! (a technique learned from the dS106 assignment bank perhaps?)
There are many questions that will always be debatable. For example, what came first the chicken or the egg? What do you think? and why?
Memes do fit the criteria of art, as may be seen by doing a definition search. Memes are legitimate forms of artistic expression that have cultural effects outside of the digital realm. They become ingrained in our minds, aiding in our understanding of the environment, and form a part of our collective psyche.
Now before you make any sudden decisions think about this.
Why is it that a person can make slashes on a canvas and can sell it in an art gallery but graffiti can’t get the same recognition?
Well-worked graffiti art is typically creative, colorful, and bold, and thus it changes the character of the particular area where it appears. In many cases, this change is positive, since the art turns drab and monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination.
Art is constantly evolving, but if the purpose of art is to express human truth, the Internet meme fits the bill. Like many other art forms, we use memes to understand, critique, and share thoughts about the world around us. Exhibits on Internet memes signal their importance and pay tribute to them as cultural icons.
As i was scrolling through the endless possibilities of options we had to choose from, i came across this stunning assignment
I knew I immediately had to do this and I already had the song vibe I wanted to put in mind. SO it was time to get to work.
First i had to choose a painting from google’s digital coloring of famous artwork. There were a bunch but I ended up choosing this one. I just looked at the photo and knew it was going to be such a relaxing piece just to color and chill with music on.
15 minutes later and i was finished….but not quite yet. It was editing time. The editing software I used to edit the video was Imovie. I have some good experience using imovie from when I was younger so it was a piece of cake for me.
For the background music, I went to youtube to look for the audio. I knew I wanted to background music more on the chill side, so what better music to choose than LO-FI! And of course I had to go with drake.
So now I just needed a third party website (opps) to download the audio. I used this music converter to download the audio into a mp3.
Now it was editing time
This part was really simple, I just imported the screen recording of me completing the coloring page and the mp3 player and layered them on top of each other and trimmed the screen recording to fit the length of the audio.
I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. All the way from reading all the cool assignments and picking one, to getting to color as my project and then editing it all was such a cool and fun project. I love how everything came out too 🙂
The second one I chose was the whisper challenge, i thought this would be really fun to do with someone else, unlike the other assignment I chose where it was just me. For this one, my boyfriend Luis joined me 🙂 Here are the assignment details
Now we just had to get to recording, the video was pretty fast because it was a very fast 3 rounds where I ended up winning.
We each wrote down some vocabulary words that had to do with the class. The left photo are what luis wrote down and the photo on the right are mine.
After we sat down and filmed the video, i again used imovie to edit it.
I decided to have a little fun with it and add some sound affects like this famous one from sponge bob!
Using imovies toolbox, i was able to add text on top of the video too to add more of an affect to it.
and that was all it ! It was really fun to sit down and film something i can even look back at and have a laugh.
