After completing my domain set up and installing the WordPress Application, it was time to login to my admin panel (www.selladsonline.com/wp-admin). Once inside the admin section, the first thing I did was to select a theme I will be working with.

The good thing about WordPress is that it has some already inbuilt themes, from where one can further modify his or her website. It is very helpful especially for people with limited knowledge of coding.

I chose the Twenty Seventeen theme because the features are appealing to me. From the dashboard, below are all the features that enabled me change the site title, color, change the header image, and delete some sections in the homepage.

The greatest challenge I encountered was how to change other images in the background. I had to watch a couple of online videos to figure out I had to go to the page section from the dashboard from where I could make changes in all the contents in the pages.

I used this process to change all the images in all the pages of my website. Before doing so, however, I had to go to pixabay to get free images. This is the first step of customizing my theme and I will continue until I realize all the features I want on my website. 

The thought of building any new project comes with excitement, especially when it’s in the field of art where there are no certain rules to follow except how far one’s creativity can go. This is how I feel about this part of our class project – creating a website using WordPress.

Before the actual process of creating the sites, there are certain procedures to set up the domain in a server and the application that will be used to create the website.

First, because I already had account with Reclaim Hosting, I decided to login to my account and get another a new domain. The image below shows my account section of the Reclaim Hosting from where I got a new domain. I ended up with www.selladsonline.com since I was going to teach how to sell social media ads and make money from small business or use it to promote one’s personal business.  I was surprised the domain name was still available.

After getting the domain name, the next thing I did was to download the application WordPress because it is one of the most open source applications for creating website. But before downloading WordPress, I did not forget to add the domain identity protection so that my personal details do not show up online. Besides, it’s free so I had to use it.

After adding the protection, as seen below I downloaded the WordPress, and I was ready to go through the limitless boundaries of unleashing my creativity through my website.

After the installation, I was all set to login to my web admin section from where I will start adding contents to my website. It was a fun experience, and very exciting.

  I felt the process was fairly easy but I messed up big time. I typed my email too fast and it was a big thing to fix. I was unable to verify my email because of this. If you have this problem you have to accept the change  of address request the will allow you to verify the email. Thats the only issue i had with registering my domain name.My next step is to transfer all my post from the class website here

During my time in CT 101, I learned how to create gifs and memes and I enjoyed using them in my personal life, especially when I have a conversation with a friend and I can snap a quick video and turn it into a gif for all of us to enjoy or a meme. It has been the talking point in many of my friend groups, I have also taught my friends how to do the same. Another skill, in the beginning, I must admit I wasn’t so excited about is blogging, since, in my major all we do is read a textbook but after creating my website I was able to really get myself excited about writing again.

I feel that my strengths are creating memes/ gifs and I need to focus my efforts on trying to create a story with my blogs because I’m a very formal writer, it’s hard to write a blog about myself and my thoughts.  I mostly stick to the facts and write in an essay form but I am improving that aspect of my writing.

As mention before, I struggled with the aspect of speaking creatively in my own authentic voice but becoming a blogger has taught me that maybe I was afraid of voicing my opinion because I didn’t want to be called out for being wrong. For example, from my first blog post to now I feel that I have been trying to be more authentic with my writing.

I feel that I have earned an A because although I’m not the best at the creative part of the assignments, I do respect the class and I do my assignment in timely. Most importantly, I can feel as a writer I am growing and becoming more serious about blogging. An example is my website started off as a Mystery Murder website that allowed users to tune into ghost stories and unsolved mysteries. I was excited to create this website and to stand out but I often found myself puzzled when creating blog posts. I had some sort of writer’s block. So, after sitting with the concept for a few weeks, I finally decided that I wanted to change the concept altogether. Hello everyone..
First I want to say that CT101 is a very different class than I thought it was. Seeing what the class was about, I thought it was a tedious class in which there was a lot of big and boring homework. But from the first day of class I realized that it was different. The energy I felt with the professor was different than what I thought (in a good way).

Main skills mmm… I would say that one of the main things that I have learned in a way is about design and right now I am doing it by customizing my website.

Also, in classes like these, there is a lot of information you can learn and I personally have learned about Photoshop, about gifs, and even about other topics like Aaron Swartz.

What are my strengths so far? To be honest, I don’t know. I think I still need to learn a little about everything.

What do you need to work on and make improvements on?
In this class I have learned that a lot of our work is related to creativity and I think I still need to work on that. We use our creativity either on our website or in the blogs that we do weekly and it is something that I think I need to improve in order to do a better job both in this class and in others.

This class is also a good way to express what you think and feel (Now more throught web pages). So, as a communicator, this class and especially about how the class is, I mean, through blogs, has helped me in that part. It has opened me up more and say what I want.

About the grades, I really don’t know what scores I have hahaha. I hope they are good of course.

I was so excited to customize my site, but the moment I type on my website I was so lost because it shows me a random page, it took time for me to figure out the actual WordPress login page.

After I successfully login I followed the professor’s tutorial to customize my site. I used the Canva app to create a logo for the site. I did not finalize my logo yet, because I am still exploring the logo website. I am very excited to see how my website will look after I complete customizing everything the way I want it. GROUND ZERO: PRE- CT-101

Let’s take it back to the beginning, It’s September 1st I’m waking up on a Tuesday morning at 7am with my dog pulling my covers off.

Ugh I  was so comfortable and I was not trying to get up but of course its another day, another class, and I can’t neglect my son so….

Fine Im up!!

Once I reluctantly roll out of bed, walk my dog, and clean his feet. I was in the need of some morning coffee.

Ahhh that better.

10am rolls around, Im 2 cups of coffee in, and I’m finally functioning… barley. Sign in to the the zoom call and at this point I’ve already got a glimpse of the class website and looked over the syllabus.

This was my reaction after reading that….

I was intrigued but skeptical at the same time. I’ve had professors in the past clam that  we were going to do some cool activities and it turn out to be a sham. I was not about to get duped another time. I popped  into the class armed with this information but took it all with a grain of salt..

THE RISE: POST DAY 1

After getting to meet Professor Seslow. I quickly figured out that he was the real deal.

So to you Sir..

After he laid down the ground work of the semester. We as a class just took off and after 8 weeks I can easily say that I’ve learn more useful and reliable things in this class then I have in any other class to this day.

This class has allowed me to appreciate the internet in a new way and i feel that my communication skills in the virtual world has improved tremendously because it.

I mean this post is an encapsulation of that improvement. I now know how to find and make GIFS and MEMES. I have become proficient in using WordPress and have may own website.

But my greatest accomplishment for these first 8 weeks is that I have finally succeeded in transferring my personality into the virtual world.

And we’re only half way through the semester in. There’s no telling where we are going to be by the end and that is the amazing part about it. We decide what that will look like.

The sky’s the limit.

THE PRESENT: WHERE I STAND

I personally feel that I have gotten better as the weeks have passed with each of my post.

I personally think my post on the internet boy was my most authentic emotional reaction. But my post Website up and running is the best at creating a story and taking you into a detailed step by step process of my journey building my website.

But there’s always room for improvement.

As I transition into working on my own website and essentially taking the training wheels off. I really want to improve my skill of working with different mediums to enhance my story telling skills.

Maybe i should mess around with more DS106 projects? I really want to learn how to incorporate audio more in my post. I want to add as many tool to my arsenal so I can start thinking outside the box and really push my skills to the limit.

Overall, I think my progression in this class has been pretty smooth. I enjoy that I can work on my assignments when I really have time to sit down and commit my full attention.

This is one of the few classes I have attended where I put my undivided attention and give my maximum effort to each and every assignment. This is not say I don’t try in my other classes. I just don’t feel as inclined and motivated in some of my other classes because of how repetitive they are. they don’t deviate from the formula and that puts me to sleep. This class provides me with the energy to keep pushing forward to innovate and that is hard to find these days when you’re stuck at home all day.

THE FUTURE: LOOKING FOWARD

Right Now, I feel just as committed to this class as I have been since the start. More so now than ever since I have my own website. I hope that my skills continue to improve and I hope that my website transforms into the vision I have in my head.

Wow, we are already halfway through the semester. So far I’ve learned a lot from this class. I was not much of a gif user until I came to this class. I really enjoyed making the gifs and writing these blog posts.

I really like this class and can’t wait to see what more we have for the rest of this semester. Now I am currently in the process of making my website.

I’ve learned how to make gif using giphy. Which was very fun. I was able to take a clip from one of my favorite youtuber and turn it into a gif. Coming to this class always puts a smile on my face because I really enjoy what we do.

Coming into this semester I had no idea what was going to happen or how this class was going to be. Even though I have taken last semester online I still was not sure how this was going to be. When you are meeting new professors you never know how things are going to be or how the class is going to be. You don’t really know what to expect. This was my first time taking any CT classes and this class made my semester. I have a lot of fun creating gifs.

Going back to my first ever post for this class I was able to share with you guys some of my favorite youtubers. Games I like to play and more. For my third assignment I was able to share what I though about memes. I never really like to share. But doing these assignments I’ve been able to share my thoughts and ideas about certain things/topics.

What grade would I give myself. I would probably give myself an A. The reason is why is because I feel like I’ve done a good job so far. Making gifs and adding them to my blogs makes everything even better I think.

This class has definitely helped me become a better communicator. The blog posts and the gifs have allow me to express and share ideas.

Aaron Schwartz’s work  that I felt was important is keeping data that is available online free and accessible to everyone. Aaron’s idea that the laws should be public information, it all makes sense yet the government and private corporations try to keep things so that they make money.

 

Aaron said the internet wasn’t around when the founding fathers wrote the constitution but if it was they would protect it they would want the knowledge that has been acquired thus far to be available to all. Aaron wanted to make the world better

 

This film was so sad. There is something wrong with the justice system how can America one of the worlds freest nation have the most people in jail. Are we actually free, or are we free until congress/law makers decide they want to change/ make up a law that makes a harmful act into a felony.

 

Why does our government build cases when there is no case, how can this be he way our nation operates there is no evidence so they gets friends and loved ones scared so they start saying things that can be misconstrued and gets people arrested and locked up in jail. For circumstance of a made up crimes all Aaron  wanted was to make the world better.

Instead of becoming a tech billionaire using his genius, instead he wanted us all to have free access to all the information that is available. Instead of being seen for his greatness he ended up with mental instability and his life ended too soon.

 

 

 

 

Part 1 of the website customization. I am super excited for this. I want to see what I can come up with. What I come up with with probably be posted here as well. Just a little rough draft or sneak peek. Being able to make a website where I talk about things I like and things I am sure others might relate to is very exciting.

After choosing my domain name I started to work on my website. I’ve decided to go with a dark theme which I mostly use on most apps I use. My website would involve me talking about games, sports, music art and many other things I like or do while at home during this COVID-19.

This is just the beginning. I am so excited to see what it looks like when everything comes together.

My mid semester review of what I have learned thus far. Let me start by saying I had no idea what to expect at the beginning of the semester, I am not good with online learning I am a person that likes to be in a classroom to have interaction and conversations about what is being taught.

 

I find it more difficult to be told read these pages and take this test. This class as my first fully online class experience well I feel now that things can only get worst. I don’t know if other professors are as easy to follow and eager to help and also answer emails outside of their office hours. So Professor Seslow has set the bar high. This class has been a great learning experiencing. A very Zen experience.

So in the beginning, I was scared not internet savvy at all. Now here I am with a my own website   , writing blogs and creating gifs using giphy and imgur  not to mention I have learned how to build on photos using pixabay and photopea .

 

 

This is great, but I skipped a lot so let me back up.  What grade would I give myself I would definitely give myself an A. The reason I would give myself an A is for effort I have really tried to get things right and make them visually appealing. I have realized how much memes and gif can enhance what my blog is about, therefore making me a better communicator.

 

I have become a better communicator at work, I have been able to send notes to my team members at work and include gifs and memes now.  Many of them have commented that they like what I am sending.  So ct101 has made a better communicator, using the internet.

 

Learning how to add these into my blog added a visual making the blogs more interesting, you see with adding these little things it makes reading a blog and following a story more interesting. So definitely an A for creativity. I will continue to work and get better.
