Memes are works of art

The definition of art is a product created with intention of communication or creating an aesthetic. Art is more than putting pen and paint to paper . Art can be created with numerous materials and is not limited to one type of form . With memes we’re able to reference popular tv moments , exaggerated expressions and , funny images to express our emotions .

Memes allow us to brighten its recipients day . One meme can say a thousand words . When we have nothing to say , there’s always a gif to break the ice . Art gives you a feeling , and memes provide you sensation . Incorporating art into our daily lives gives us joy and the push to express ourselves all across the board . To spark creativity , one has to be inspired.

Assignment 3: Are Memes Art?

Are Memes Art? I think memes are art. Its something created by a person to express somethings to others. Art is for someone to be creative and express your imagination.  So Memes are art.

Memes Are Art by rolfusmaximus - Meme Center

what is the meaning of Art?

Art, in its broadest sense, is a form of communication. It means whatever the artist intends it to mean, and this meaning is shaped by the materials, techniques, and forms it makes use of, as well as the ideas and feelings it creates in its viewers . Art is an act of expressing feelings, thoughts, and observations.”

( https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-arthistory/chapter/what-is-art/ ) I also linked it in the word ART.

Art is whatever a person wants it to be. Therefor Memes are art. Memes are a sort of self-expression because its a creation of how you feel or what you like.  You could do whatever you want with a meme and add your style to it.

If someone does not think memes are art. All imma say is..

I was never a person who really used memes a lot. This class has made me realized of how fun it is using memes and also creating them. My friends would always send a meme to the group chat and once in a while I would send one to show my reaction to something they said just to try it out. Now I use memes a lot more.

This class is definitely one of my favorite classes and most fun class that I’ve ever taken.

Below is a link of a video I found talking about memes↓↓

Assignment 3: Are Memes Art?

Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

According http://webopedia.com

Memes area concept or idea that spreads virally from one person to another via the Internet. An Internet meme could be anything from an image to an email or video file; however, the most common meme is an image of a person or animal with a funny or witty caption. The proliferation of social media has led to Internet memes spreading very quickly and reaching more people. Many Internet memes use humor and appeal largely to the adolescent and post-adolescent demographic: this demographic is much more likely to discover Internet memes, understand the humor behind them and be willing to forward it on to friends.”

The digital age has changed the type of media art is seen and created on. The use of paints and sculpting will always be needed, but the downside is these things break and get damaged over time. Memes are timeless in a sense they aren’t link to a period in time or an artist style. MEMES ARE ART

I had a horrible experience on the MTA Thursday after class. I got on a bus. My daughter and I boarded the bus, and the driver never secured my wheelchair. She told me it wasn’t her job to do so. She allowed my chair to skid while she drove as I held my daughter in my lap. By law, the bus isn‘t supposed to be in motion until my chair is secured. She wouldn’t give or name and badge number I reported her to the MTA. I even plan on Suing the MTA for negligence. I have made it my life’s mission to call people out on their crap when they violate my rights. Memes allow me to show how ridiculous people sound when they say ignorant things to me in relation to me being disabled. This is to bring awareness to inclusion and give a voice to people who may not be as vocal as I am.

Are Memes Art?

The question at hand is, “Are Memes Art?” In my opinion, if we stop to think about the process of both memes and traditional art, we see that both forms of artwork require expressive thinking, inspiration, and imagination. Looking at it in this sense, then yes, memes are art.

The great thing about having such a strong opinion about this kind of topic is that many others share the same opinion- so I think my opinion is correct :D. An article published by The News Record also classifies memes as being art and even stated that that classification is not receiving as much recognition as it deserves. (The article was excellent, you all should give it a read!)

Professor Seslow asked if we thought that soon we would find memes in museums or memes being recognized as actual artwork and the answer, for me, is YES! Whenever I go into a museum, I look around and there are many paintings or 3D art pieces that make no sense to me at all and so because of that, it’s always so hard for me to enjoy museum trips. Because memes are so relatable and understandable, it would be so delightful to have a museum dedicated to memes where I, and many others, would be able to immerse myself into art that I can appreciate.

Also, officially recognizing memes as art would be a great way for current meme moguls to make earnings from something they genuinely enjoy creating. Over the years we have seen jobs become more creative- there are people that play video games for their income and even those that post pictures on social media platforms for their income. I think soon enough ‘meme-making’ will become a mainstream career and more people will be able to make money from something from doing something they already do. (According to the online business realm, you can already make money from making memes!)

My favorite thing about memes- and you guys can tell me if this is true for you as well- is that they somehow seem to find you. Not sure what I mean? Okay, look at it this way. Have you ever been thinking about something and then you see a meme that perfectly describes what you’re thinking? Or have you ever been feeling some sort of emotion and then you see a meme that’s basically describing everything you’re currently experiencing? Well, that always happens to me. It’s like the memes are just waiting for me to experience a certain feeling and then they come to find me. I know it’s strange to think about in that way but it’s always reassuring to me that someone else is relating to my current emotion- because someone had to make that meme.

I’ve always been interested in making new memes but never knew how to- yes, I know there are apps that make memes pretty easy to make but those apps seemed so easy…and I like a challenge. So I just wanted to give Professor Seslow a shout-out for presenting us with creative ways to make memes and for giving us the opportunity to tap into our creative sides. I’m really loving this class!

Assignment #4: Digital Storytelling Flexibility Project Part 1

I choose the Word Cloud assignment from DS 106 my first project, it was easy to complete by myself. It requires you to use different words that have meaning to you. You turn it into a cloud by typing those words into a Word Cloud generator. WordArt Generator was the website I used. (They do charge for you to own it) However you can screenshot and crop the image. I love the 90’s vibe of the font I choose because it remind me of  the font for The Wayans Bros. The font is (Caesar Dressing).

I decided to twist this project by using a picture of me as a backdrop. I have been learning about a source’s bias when interviewing in my journalism 280 class. I realized how biased my word cloud would be because I didn’t want to put negative words in my word cloud. I decided to ask my social media followers on Facebook and Instagram to describe my personality using one word. While some most positive, some were negative (my sister is my biggest hater). Many of my friends didn’t read the previous comments and often repeated the same words.

Some words that are mentioned within the art are: Lit, Dope, Afrocentric, Genuine, open-minded, loud mean, welcoming, loyal, red, devious, sarcastic, welcoming, beautiful, ratchet, intelligent, dedicated and outspoken. The colors are what is picked up from the image (Red, Black and Green) are the colors of the pan african flag and the green depicted is actual black. Its funny how my Africana studies influence always seems to come through my art in some way. This was the first thing I noticed.

In CT101, I’m learning the importance of communication because of remote learning. Accessibility is important when trying to engage with different types of audiences. Journalism incorporates the use of social media to interact with our audience, even after I posted on my social media people continued to give me words to use which was great. This project’s photo is a personality shot that gives whoever is looking at it a glimpse of who I am. The words have meaning because they come from people who have met me in different life stages.

Assignment #1 Internet Joy

A tad late to the party but here to answer the question; What in the internet makes me happy. Well for starters like anyone we see happiness all in different kind of ways, someone’s laughter can be someone’s frown and vise versa. But I don’t think my happiness is something many frown upon, mainly when it comes to the internet… So lets begin to learn my favorite things in the good old internet.

For starters I Love Google, it makes ya smile!

Google is my friend, is it yours?

If I don’t know it, I’ll google it. If I cant spell a word correctly, I’ll google it and the auto correct word options will save my life once more. I’ve been using Google as my search engine for years, Bing what? Yahoo what?

And using Google I can easily find the best anime sites a person needs, that’s how I found Crunchyroll, Kissanime.ru, Funimation and many other sites to access my favorite anime, and with this we enter to the joy given by the internet which is Anime!

The Seven Deadly Sins
Hunter X Hunter
One Piece

If it’s one thing that keeps me entertained and happy in the internet is the gift of allowing us to access anime. If you love seeing crazy fights, seeing great story lines and much more check out some of the titles above! I started watching anime since I was 12, I am now 20 lol. The titles just get better and better as the years come and without the internet this joy will not be possible. My all time favs are those above shown by the gifs, to end it, a final gif that shows another all time fav!

Digital Storytelling Project Flexibility

There is A LOT of CT101 – Digital Storytelling Project Flexibility..

***Below are the Zoom class Video recordings from 9/24, 10/1 & 10/6 with this project demonstration, description and process – enjoy!***

Professor Michael Smith introduced me to the DS106 Assignment Repository several years ago. I am glad that he did!

Now that we are getting comfortable with publishing blog posts to our class website, embedding media like images, GIFS, videos and hyperlinks, its time to push things further with content creation and deciding on how you will go about it.

Prof. Smith wrote the following in a blog post from a previous semester;

“In CT-101 you will have the opportunity to create many, many different pieces of media throughout the semester. Inspiration for these projects can come from a number of places. Two are websites that inspired this class and are hosted by a digital storytelling class at the University of Mary Washington.

One is their ds106 assignment repository which has project prompts that are categorized by a variety of media types (visual, design, audio, video, mashup, writing, fanfic, and animated gifs). You can browse through and sort by most examples completed, most viewed, newest, and more..

The second is also a site known as the daily create which gives a daily project prompt to “make something” using various media. If you post the completed piece with tags to the sites they feed from, you’ll see your work on that page as well.

Finally you can also browse through the main feed of the old CT101 site and see works completed by students in the previous semester. Or find a particular site that has a media piece and/or project type of interest to you (Tumblr and/or Reddit can be fun for this – Photoshop Battles is a favorite of mine.

Browse through these sites and find two projects that you think you would like to do. One that you believe you already have the skills to do or you believe you could figure out on your own. And another (hopefully of a different media type) you don’t know how to do yet and would like to learn.”

*The ASSIGNMENT – In a New Blog Post – working from the DS106 or the Daily Create site select, describe and hyperlink to two assignments/project ideas and tell us why you’ve chosen them. What do you think you’d need learn to do them? How many of these kinds of projects do you think you should be doing in this semester so that you might learn and build both emergent storytelling skills and use new tools to create them? Why do you think these skills are or are not important? Be sure to actually complete one of the assignments and add it to your blog post. Also, be sure to leave a comment or two on one or more of your classmate’s blog posts! Prof. Seslow will go over a example in our class time and screen record the process.

Are Memes Art?

My face if anyone says Memes are bad for art. Memes is actually the future of art if you ask me! Memes changed the whole aspect of social media and how we react to anything in general!

Memes is 100x better for communication. Memes simply gives us another point of view in viewing things. How many times have we found ourselves laughing at a meme that may be relatable? Don’t lie, I know its a lot!

Btw, this has been my mood lately!

There’s a famous quote that goes by “A picture is worth a thousand words”, We can say the same about Memes! Memes are so much more than just self expression!

You can share your feelings without saying a single word. Isn’t that incredible? To spice it up, if you want, you can write whatever you like in the Meme.

As you guys can tell by now, Lebron James is my favorite athlete!

Assignment #3 – Memes = Art?

Hi everyone!

Memes are a form of self expression, much like many other renowned artworks, so why is there such a hesitance when it comes to acknowledging them as art?

Something we covered in one of my other classes was that throughout art history, creating and owning art was often a symbol of class and status. A working class artist would have to try 10 times harder to succeed than  his upper class counterpart!

That’s part of why I think that there’s such a controversy over recognizing memes as art. On one hand, you’re expressing your self (the textbook definition of what art is considered to be), but on the other, everyone’s doing it, so does that negate it’s artistic quality? Does that make it less special?

I always liked this piece by Duchamp, because I considered it to be the very first meme:

L.H.O.O.Q (1919) depicts the Mona Lisa with a moustache, and the text is an abbreviation of the phrase “elle a chaud au cul”, meaning “she has a hot butt”. Basically, it was a part of the Dada movement, which emphasized the humorous and nonsensical things in life.

Memes are basically the seasoning of our lives. We can express how we feel, infer how others feel, and relate to each other in this way. I can say I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by this year:

But looking through memes online always put me in a better mood:

On top of everything, I get to make memes for homework!

Soooo, are memes art? I definitely think so. Art is subjective. I believe that it can be anything that you want/consider it to be, and anyone can be an artist; but that’s just my opinion.

Assignment #3 – Are Internet Memes Art?

Memes are Art!

I view memes as a form of expression. A way to communicate your thoughts and feelings through pictures and words. They pretty much cover what it says in our following definition.

Britannica defines art as “a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination.”

That’s got to tell you something about what is considered Art. Although the definition is not quite specific, it does tell us that art is a form of expressive imagination!

Assignment 3: Are MEMES Art?

Are Memes Art? Hmmmm

Absolutely, memes are indeed art. Memes are a way

for the person to truly express themselves and show there creativity

towards a certain topic and it is here to stay!

Among us is a free mobile/PC game that just came out.

It is pretty much mafia but in space and you have to find the killer

Here some memes from this game that is trending everywhere, it’s  hilarious!

Here is a youtube video from my channel playing among us with my friends!

Now besides Among Us here is a classic meme!

Lebron’s face and frustration towards JR Smith taking the ball to the opposite direction. No one really know what was going on inside this man’s head costing the championship game (click here)

Okay geez… I get it.. your waiting for my CT 101 meme

here you go!

Assignment #3: Are Internet Memes Art?

Memes are such an important aspect of the internet that it’s safe to assume it is more than just art; it is a culture.

When most people think of memes, they think of something funny, and with good reason too. Users of instant messaging apps like Facebook Messenger tend to use memes in the form of images or gifs to create an emphasized message that is usually hilarious and a bit outrageous, like a bunny with a humanlike smile to show how happy they are (this gif made me laugh quite a bit.)

However, you can use memes to show other emotions besides happiness.

What’s also great about memes is they introduce people to new topics and genres! An old but great meme that is still remembered today is the “Rick Roll”. It was a meme that was created around the time when Youtube first came out, and the main idea of it was to trick users into clicking on a video, then showing Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.

I was introduced to Rick Astley through the Rick Roll meme, and I still listen to his music even today.

I think my favorite part about memes is the massive variety that is available. Websites like Imgur and GIPHY  provide new memes to the internet everyday, and they let you know which ones are trending. In my opinion, the most hilarious memes are the ones you can relate to the most.

Whether it be my sad bank account balance,

Laying in my bed and having trouble sleeping,

Last minute panic from trying to do a ten page paper in one night,

Or even trying to stay healthy during the school semester, all these memes, in one sense, are a funny but are also somewhat accurate portrayal of how I feel about certain things. It’s come to a point where memes are not just an “activity” I take part in, but rather, a method of self expression.

What’s awesome about memes is although most people simply just view them, we can ALL make our own memes! Using Make a Meme, I was able to make some pretty cool ones about CT101.

I’m really loving this class so far, but I just realized something…

Are memes ART?!

Are internet memes a form of Art?

Of coarse!

Just like ART, it’s a form that allows people to express themselves creatively.

Meme: an element of a culture or system of behavior… https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+a+meme&oq=what+is+a+meme+&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.6499j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Now, what is culture? Well, its definitely an art!

ART: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination…

https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+art&oq=what+is+art&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.4361j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

This all adds up! It proves that memes can be considered a form of ART.

I believe that memes are good for communication because it gives us a better picture of what one is expressing. Just texting isn’t enough. Memes can also allow someone to relate more. For example, lets ask ourselves, how many times have we said, “this is true” or have laughed  about memes because you connected something with it. You see!

Many times we don’t want to talk, instead we just want to send a picture that shows how we feel at that moment.

Thanks to memes, we can do that!

Like this! This was me when we started CT101.

Another example is when someone says that CT101 class is a chill class. Just saying that is not enough to express what you think.

You have to see the picture to get the full idea. Just like Art pieces, some artists draw to express themselves better.
