We’re creating domain names now, huh?

It’s so hard to think about potential options since I have NO IDEA what I want to write about on the website. 

I thought.

r e a l  h a r d.

And all I really talk about is art or talk about myself.

(NOT IN A COCKY WAY)

it’s just really what I know the MOST about 

 (definitely not because it’s the easiest topic)

Thinking about these potential names was pretty easy since it was my name and I KNOW 100% no one else has my name B).

Potential names where I can just talk about myself and what I’ve done throughout the day could be:

I thought the 1st one was just simple since it’s my name. BUT, I thought about how some may find it hard to type it or remember since my name is hard to spell out so for the 2nd one, I thought about my Instagram handle. THEN I thought about dailydoseofmungie.

(mungie is a nickname that my friends have given me since elementary school. I don’t really know where the -gie came from but it’s been stuck with me since :D)

Potential names I thought about where I did have some kind of theme and were not generalized were:

I thought that for #4, I can talk about different art forms and any artistic hobbies one can adopt. I can show some of my work and maybe give out tips that I thought were helpful. I feel as if I have a lot to say about this topic: singing, playing the ukulele, sewing, drawing, painting, photographing, and now digital storytelling B).

For #5, I thought that maybe I could post different outfits that I wear each day.

 Lately, I’ve been thrifting every day…

Which is bad BUT at least I get good deals :D. So, I can probably post things I’ve found at the thrift store and talk about the different trends that have been happening in fashion whether it’s streetwear, minimalistic, or vintage.

I am prettttty enthusiastic about becoming a future website owner.

I like how on a website, it’s your own thing. Similarly to Youtube, which is one of my favorite sites. You’re able to post video content about anything that you desire. On your own website, instead of making a video and editing, you’re just typing while expressing yourself without physically talking.

Another website that is one of my favorites is TikTok.

I know it’s an app, BUT YOU CAN ALSO USE IT ON THE WEB!

Similarily to most applications, you’re able to follow people with your content of choice, and it’s short and simple for times where you just want to take a break.

I think it will be super fun to create a website for an upcoming business my friend and I are in the works for. In the next couple of weeks, we will be tufting and selling rugs, so I thought this would give a cool inspiration and practice for when we actually have to make one. Im super excited to do this assignment because not only do I find design fun, but I will connect with it personally. 

According to Wikipedia, tufting is ,”…a type of textile manufacturing in which a thread is inserted on a primary base.” We plan on doing so much with this business and we are super excited about what’s ahead of us.

I don’t really have a favorite website. While searching, I found Balenciagas layout to be pretty cool. I like how as soon as you enter the webpage, there is a video playing and as you scroll down more photos are displayed but everything’s the same width and length. Each media takes up the full screen which is cool.

Not saying this because of this class (haha) but I genuinely like the giphy website too. I like how the background is black so you could literally have so many colors going and it wont look weird. The fact there there’s so many different colors, images and content sizes all fits so well together.

For the domain, it will be named Urbanalliance.net

Last week we began talking about Domain Names and what role they play in creating a digital identity on the web (and as a part of this class.) If you missed that post, please be sure to check out our course schedule page under week #9 as it has context and will help make this next step a bit smoother. 

This week we are going to get started!

We are going to begin the process of registering a domain name and also setting up web hosting, which will allow you to put files up online that will be discoverable through your new domain name! We are going to use a form of ‘shared hosting’ where you get a portion of a server – think of it as having an apartment in a building. With this shared hosting you will be able to do a lot of things including installing your own instance of WordPress (**remember, this is NOT wordpress.com but the open source version of wordpress.org) so you can start building your website for your domain name.

We use a company called Reclaim Hosting, with which we have a contract with so you will enter a coupon code and start your account for free.

*The coupon code will be e-emailed to everyone via blackboard on the morning that your class meets during week #10

We chose this hosting company because they have a lot of experience working with students just like you, that are likely getting their first domain name and web hosting account. You will be creating an account just like you would with any online vendor with which you want to purchase something. So it’s not a ‘CUNY’ account, we’re just giving you the coupon code to pay for the year’s service. The service will last for 1 year.

You do not need to pay for anything, so please reach out if you have questions – [email protected]

With that said, you will need to provide a name, address, and phone number. Lets go to this sign-up page <— to get started with the domain name selection process.

1. First you will need to pick your domain name, make sure that it is available and make your selection to proceed. (I suggest sticking with the .com or .net extensions)

2. On the next page, check the ‘add ID protection.’

3. On the next page you should see two items in your cart and a price of $45 with ID protection, you will then enter the needed information for your account and provided coupon code and validate it. (you will NOT be charged for this, its already included in the course.)

4. Your total should now be $0. If it is not then check the items and your cart and adjust.

5. You should now fill in your personal information, and select the payment by mail option. (again, you will not be charged anything.)

6. Complete the order and check your email for your account information and a verification of your e-mail, e-mail. With your new account information, log-on to Reclaiming Hosting. Shortly after setting up your account and registering your domain you must verify your account via        e-mail by clicking on the link they send to you. (be on the look out for a series of e-mails from Reclaim Hosting.

Assignment #8 – (you must complete part 1 before moving on to part 2 – After following along in our zoom session today and then reregistering your domain name, setting up web hosting & WordPress – please publish a detailed blog post about the overall experience of registering your own domain, and setting up your web hosting account. Be sure to include screenshots, images, videos and hyperlinks for context. (as always)

In CT101, I feel like I am doing pretty good overall because I have used most of the tools of CT101.Commons website efficiently and effectively. What I have learned and retained the most are how to embed a video url onto a blog post and using hyperlinks to direct my classmates, professor and others to my source of information such as a link to a gif or a YouTube video.

The new skills I have developed, cultivated and displayed regularly in my            my performance through self-reflection in this class by looking back and reviewing my previous blog posts to see if I need any improvements. So far, the blog posts I have done and completed are assignment #1, assignment #2, assignment #4, and assignment #5.

The things I know now that I didn’t know before taking this class were how to make your own memes and embedding gifs on my blog posts and now I can do that on any other platform that allows embedding gifs and posting my own memes. I believe that the grade I am maintaining is at least a B or a B+.

I feel that my weekly blogging work is not expanding creatively. I am stuck in a loop where my posts seem to look the same most of the time. I can change that, instead of embedding five gifs or memes in every blog post, have some blog posts with five and some with seven gifs or memes, like a pattern.

The assignment that I am missing is assignment #3. I am commenting regularly on my classmates posts. But I have not responded back to comments given to me by the professor and my classmates. I am also participating during the class time. I will make improvements by being attentive on CT101.commons and checking my notifications more often for comments from my classmates and my professor.

It’s time for a new blog!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to class because I am sick but that’s beside the point. After watching the videos and reading Ryan’s post I’ve been thinking about my domain name! Well not really I still think as I’m writing.

However, I do know what I want to do for my website. I want a website to show all of my artwork from over the years. An online art portfolio so I can send it to future jobs to show that I am qualified to work. Also, to look back at my work years from now.

SO! Now let’s start with the names

Okay hear me out, I think it is a good name because I want it to be short and the other names are just variations of this. I want it simple.

2.MCarts.com

See with this, ts a cool name because it is straight to the point and simple… However, you can see an issue, it looks like it says cart rather than art. which would seem that I sell carts rather than show my art.

3.MichaelDesign.com
This one is good but in my head, all I see is Michael’s…. the perks of having a name like mine lol.

4.MichaelColladoArt.comThis is definitely my least favorite one because it’s too long and very basic.

5. MCworks.comJust like the previous ones this wasn’t strong, it felt off in my opinion. Maybe if I switch around the words then maybe.

I think that all I had, was short because the names were self-explanatory and I think all of them have the potential for my website.

Where to start with this post…… To put it lightly this semester has been hectic for me. I was recommended CT last semester by my English professor and also told to take Ryan Seslow, neither of which I regret. When the beginning of the semester started and we all talked about our struggles as people in a world where no one cares how your personal life affects your performance in other areas, I knew I was in the right place. Especially since we’re all adults with other classes and commitments but, I feel like I’ve managed. Not as well as I would have liked but I did get to do some really cool things which I’ll talk about later.

As for my blog posts, some have gone up later than I’d like and I always feel slightly behind. However, knowing our professor (whom I’m thankful to have) I know I have time to keep up with the rest of the class.  Overall, I’ve learned a lot in this class and it’s been one of the deciding factors for me to stay in this major.

Our first blog post… I remember it fondly, we were just supposed to use it to get familiar with inserting different types of media into our posts. Since I had never done it before, using hyperlinks to link something to a word or sentence was the coolest thing ever. I remember immediately loving that and to this day it’s own of my favorite things to do in a blog post.

By the time we did our second assignment, I already felt more comfortable. Luckily enough, our professor is always straightforward and very clear about what he’d like to see in our blog posts. But he also doesn’t limit us to those requirements and mostly we just have to talk about what we were feeling about the material and our class.

The third assignment kind of threw me for a loop. At first, I thought making memes and gifs would be easy, but as I sat down to do it myself… EVERYTHING went wrong XD. At the time I was still using my old computer which struggled with saving some of the gifs or memes I did make. I also had a problem with getting the right parts of videos to save into the gifs I wanted. It took the video tutorial our professor gave us and some serious patience to get through the gif-making process XD.

Over time, I became more confident in our assignments. The rest of them simply expanded on skills we were developing already. I still like to make memes every once in a while although I’m more partial to gifs.

Which do you like to make more??

As for my overall performance, I’d like to think I’m doing well (at least a solid A- or B). I know I’ve missed a few classes here and there but I’m hoping that now that life has calmed down that won’t be the case anymore. I do watch the lectures whenever I get the chance and I try my best to keep up with the blogs, comments, and lessons ( even though I know I’m always 1 or 2 blog posts behind) but again, I’m hoping that won’t be the case anymore.

I’ve learned so much since starting this class, including how to set up a website a couple of weeks ago. However, I’m always my own worst critic so I’ll try to see my blog posts objectively. I feel like they’ve maintained a consistent backbone of a few gifs and I also try to let my personality come through a bit. Going forward, I plan to include even more media if I can find some that relate to the topic and also more created memes of my own especially now that I found a template website I like.

As far as missing posts go, this and assignment #7 are the only ones I haven’t done yet. I plan to fix that between tonight and tomorrow morning since I have some time to kill before class. My participation online could be better, I try to respond to the comments I get on my blog posts regularly. But, I don’t feel like I’ve commented enough on others’ posts and I plan to fix that right after finishing these two assignments. Class time participation always feels more natural to me because I enjoy the environment of having a class discussion where we all talk at that moment.

The idea of a mid-semester assessment is one that I never had before but once again kudos to our professor for thinking of ways to constantly help us improve not just in this class but as people that operate in the world. I appreciate this because it really helps me put into perspective how I have been doing and how I plan to improve. I look forward to the rest of the semester because I know that all of us are going to do awesome.

I think I’m doing well… I think I just have a BIT of a hard time because I’m like:

 “oh? no due date? I’ll work on it next week!” and then next week comes around and…

I’ve learned so many things. To hyperlinking words & pictures, how to PROPERLY make a good gif B), and how to use different websites like giphy.com, ds 106 assignment bank, and the mmm.page. 

Everything that I’ve learned and retained, I’d never have learned or used before I started taking this class, which I’m glad because each week we learn something new every day which gives structure to our blog in creating something fun.

I feel like I’ve displayed most of my blogs where I’ve answered the prompt given and answered all the questions while having them flow to one another. Where it isn’t too much all over the place and where I still remember to hyperlink and not to use TOO many memes or gifs but just a good amount of it.

I think through this self-reflection, I’ve realized I need to work on my time management. That even though each blog doesn’t have a due date, it does pile up. But I feel as if the pressure I give myself to finish it, makes me work on it even MORE and produce a blog that I feel IS good to post and not just a blog where I’m posting JUST to post.

I do see my weekly blogging work expanding very creatively BUT at the same time, it also looks the same. I haven’t commented on some of my classmates’ posts, which would be done by the time you’re done reading this :D. 

HOWEVER, when Professor Seslow or any of my peers comment back, I do always reply. During class time, I don’t really participate, and it’s not because I’m not focused in the class, it’s just that my anxiety p e a k s.

I remember Professor Seslow and a classmate asked about my palette seal, and that enough gave me anxiety even though it wasn’t even that complicated to answer back. I’ll make improvements to maybe stop worrying about things I shouldn’t be worrying about and just worry about the more important things in life :D.

For this assignment I chose to look into the visual Assignments section of ds106 assignment directory.

The two assignments I chose were a gif assignment and an Adobe illustrate assignment.

Right off the back I knew that I could complete the Gif assignment, as this is something we have been working on in class. The assignment asked that I choose a clip from my favorite movie scene and turn it into a short animated Gif. Which would highlights the essence of the chosen scene.

The secound assignment which I was less confident I would be able to do asked that I use photoshop to create a clipping mask image. One that utilizes shdows to make it more realistic.

I was not too sure that I could complete this assignment being that I am not too familiar with photoshop. I had not used photosop beyond the object selection tool and resize image tools.

I found a tutorial on youtube detailing haow to use the the clipping mask tool.

After watchng the tutorial I realized that the assignment was actually easier than I imagined. The terminology just made sound slighly difficult.

I first dowloaded adobe illustrator  and created a new file–>

I found a picture of grass on google and added it to illustater by dragging it from my desk top.

I then opened a new page added text and the grass image.

selected the text only and bought it to the front.

Following this i selected the text and made it a compound shape.

I selected both the grasss and the text hit control + click and made them a clipping mask.

whcich combined the grass and text. I found an imageof dirts and sent it to the back layer. Object–> Arrange–> send backward.

next i ateempted to add adrop shadow in illustrator however it did not seem to work for me. So i transferred both the grass and the dirt as two seperate layers to photoshop and added the shadow.

During this semester I think we should expore new  varrying projects like this more often. I think it is useful to gain a better grasp of different storytelling and design tools. After this project I feel a bit more tech savy. And I look foward to learning how to create things like this.

 

 

I define being alive as someone who is thriving. Whether it’s just pushing yourself to drink more water, or taking yourself out on a date, being alive is being able to push your limits.

 I thought being financially stable and being able to afford your wants and needs is what makes us alive, which is still somewhat true, but I feel as if making this our top priority comes from family influences.

I understand where they are coming from since they just want to give us a future that they didn’t get to have, but it’s to the point where some people tend to lose themselves and forget to take care of themselves. Yes, you need money to get around places, but if it’s a job where, I’m completely miserable, i’m güd luv.

Being alive is making each day have a purpose, even if it’s just getting out of bed c:

I’m very passionate about art.

 (that’s what gets me out of bed) 

Anything that has to do with an artistic sense, I have much of a fondness for. 

Even if it was a math class, I always made my notes articulately where I can still make them my own, in terms of making my handwriting a certain way or drawing diagrams. 

I’d say just the career path I’m taking is holding me back. Since I’m not an art major, anything I do isn’t for a grade anymore, it’s just a hobby, which is still okay but I still feel like it’s different showing it as an achievement than a hobby.

I’m inspired to express myself visually than verbally. I have a more challenging time expressing myself through words than through something I’ve made. I’m inspired to show others the world I see, even if it isn’t aesthetically pleasing at first glance; I hope I get to make something that isn’t usually seen as beautiful, b e a u t i f u l . 

I feel as if sometimes people think too seriously and say:

 “oh. it’s just a fork.” or “oh. it’s just a shadow.”

I hope to influence others to look outside the box and think deeply about how it makes them feel, whether through the composition, the lighting, or how things are placed.

Working with the mmm.page was really fun! At first, I didn’t really know what I was doing…

as per usssssual :D.

All I knew was I didn’t want to use anything that I didn’t construct myself. As I said earlier, I tried to describe myself without using words, so I combined things that I’ve made like my painting, drawing, and photographs. I made the pages in ways where there’s so much going on that you can’t fully grasp just like that, you have to actually take the time to analyze each one.

In CT 101 i believe I am doing very good. I’ve learned a lot and i am okay with keeping up with assignments. I’ve learned about hyperlinks and gifs the most.

I’ve retained this blog platform the most. The new skill I’ve learned is making gifs, making a creative website and making blogs. Reflecting on my performance in this class id say i’m doing very great.

I know how to make blogs with various media and more now. I believe I am maintaining an A in the class hopefully.

I definitely see my weekly blogging expanding. I see myself improving in many areas. I am missing assignment 7.

I comment on some classmates posts and i respond to people that comment on mine. I participate sometimes. i can improve on comments. Above are the links to my other posts.

This week’s assignment taught us to look through the 

ds106 assignment repository & the daily create. 

I like both websites as it has a wide variety of project prompts

(especially for someone who needs that kind of v a r i e t y ).

Something that caught my eye in the ds106 assignment repository was the visual assignments, and I don’t know how much I have to

e m p h a s i z e

but I’m very much a visual learner c;.

I took the opportunity to “kill two birds with one stone”, by directly looking into any photography assignments since I’m also taking a photography class. There was this assignment called Multiply Yourself. I thought this was seen various of times and I felt like this was something I would enjoy since I already had much experience in Photoshop.

I tried using Photoshop Express but it was making me pay just to blend TWO photos >:c.

So I used Photoshop Mix which is also free :D.Since I didn’t want to multiply myself, I chose the second best subject, my girlfriend :D.

I took many photographs of her while she was doing her homework (which I thought was really funny because you can see how she goes back and forth to her laptop and iPad).

I opened Photoshop Mix and click on the button in the top right-hand corner. 

Then, add any photograph that you want to become your base, or whatever you want to be “shown”more.

Now, we see my diligent working subject and click on a n o t h e r  plus button and chose another photo. 

From here, we click on the option blend and just drag the slider to your own d e s i r e. Now, you see how it looks bland and flat?

Just add a bit of pizzazz and you’re done!

I know it looks like there’s not really a MULTIPLE of her, but it almost looks like it was taken while she was moving and that was my vision for this assignment. I feel as if it gives more emotion compared to ACTUAL multiples of her.

Next, I went to the daily create and there was this assignment called #tdc3934 #ds106 Imagine A Leaf #writeout.I saw it had 7 responses already and it had different responses, some people drew a leaf with the mapping of the stems and some shared their favorite photograph of a leaf. This is my take on imagine a leaf.

My type of drawings are more abstract, I really like one line drawings, so I just took the liberty and drew different kind of leaves and kind of drew them on top of each other just like the photograph of my girlfriend.

I believe we needed to learn how to do this so could engage different audiences with our blogs. Of course, having a type of pattern in our blogs, our own sense of blog type is fun but it’s nice to change it up a bit. 

I think we should be doing a project every other week. A week to play around and learn new skills and tools so we can better our storytelling skills. I do think that these skills are important because it doesn’t hurt to try and learn new things.

I think it helps us look outside the box in having different audiences rather than just focusing on what we already know. Though we may not really do it well, at least we tried.

Based on my purely 100 percent unbiased opinion I am doing great in ct101 and have retained a decent bit of post creation to try and keep my posts more natural and smoothed out in addition to increasing my general technical knowledge.

As far as my own performance I think I’m a good poster even tho I’m not the most punctual and see myself in the grade B range because I do try my best on my posts even tho they are late and I am antisocial so I don’t get too many comments are comment much myself.

Thanks to this class I do now know just how much money is in the cybernetic world.

I definitely do think my posts have gradually become more entertaining as I have tried to be more like myself in them where I joke often.

I don’t believe there are any assignments I am missing other than #4 as I didnt see enough in my posts archive and I do not really comment often im just not a super social person but i rarely do get comments so it works out. This also coincides to class as I like to just sit by myself not saying much because Im more of an observer first.

I’m very critical of myself, so gauging how I’m doing in class is going to be difficult without being too hard on myself. I think so far I’m doing good, I think my knowledge of the internet has helped me learn and use a lot of the sites we need to use in class. I think a skill I developed is using memes, gifs, stickers, etc. For years, I have been very conservative with the usage of memes and gifs on a lot of my documents. I think I did this for the sake of professionalism, adhering to social norms, and my knowledge of internet subcultures.

I think memes can age a project really quickly due to the concept of meme expiration. Memes have a peaking period during their lifespan before dipping off in popularity and entering into obscurity. Thats why it’s difficult to watch internet-centered horror movies or dramas, it seems like it’s trying to appeal to young people or internet users while not understanding the assets they’re using or not having the knowledge of how to use those assets. So I didn’t want to seem like I was overcompensating with the usage of digital assets like memes, gifs, stickers, or emojis. Like most things, a tactical usage of memes can enhance a project and even tell a story.

 

I can rate myself based on the syllabus requirements. I can ask myself if I’m following the requirements to the best of my ability. I can also ask if I’m exceeding those requirements to the best of my ability and ask myself what I offer to the class. I can also ask myself if I learned anything. One of the things I learned that I thought was pretty cool was that GIFs are quite ancient and older than even the internet itself. It was really something I found interesting and puts everything into perspective. If I were to give myself a grade, it would be an A minus. I am very critical of my work and sometimes I wonder if I’m doing good or not, often it’s hard to tell because I know that I can disengage with reality and often lose self-awareness so it really helps to have other people look at my work and comment.

I think my work can get more creative after this. I think it’s a matter of being more liberal with my technology, rather than being minimalistic and utilitarian. I think creativity and control are both aspects of an artist that need to be balanced and sometimes my creativity can be damped by my need to control the narrative that my work conveys. So hopefully in the future, my website can be a lot more lively and I can build on an aesthetic.
